Resistance 2 builds upon the original, Resistance: Fall of Man, not just in terms of story but in gameplay to the fullest extent. The single player campaign packs a good 8-10 hours of story-driven play, whereas the new set of cooperative missions offer upwards of 20-30 hours. Throw in competitive multiplayer and there's quite a bit to bite off here. While we can't necessarily guide you to victory in competitive matches, our guide has everything you need to make it through the single player campaign and get all 39 trophies. Good luck and happy Chimera hunting!
Single Player Campaign
Basic Tips
While Resistance 2 shares a lot in common with other modern shooters, there are a few special suggestions that will help you get through the game. Certainly keep your shooter skills from other games honed too, as a keen eye and quick reflexes will do you good here.
Cover: it's your best friend in Resistance 2. Taking cover increases your chances of survival dramatically and is often the only way to get through some tough sequences.
Reloading: always reload whenever there's a lull in the action. Even if you're down only one bullet, reload anyway--that one bullet could make the difference between finishing a mission or dying.
Grenades: nothing is more deadly that a grenade in a tight space. Use them when you've got them, but be mindful of where you're throwing. A common mistake is to chuck a grenade only to have it bounce back, which equals a silly unintended death. It's generally good to maximize your grenade's punch by throwing them at tight groups of enemies.
Secondary Fire: don't forget that every gun has a secondary fire--it can make an enormous difference in combat. The Magnum, for instance, can hit multiple enemies with its explosive secondary round even after you've killed the primary target with the bullet. These little bonuses can give you a huge advantage so don't overlook them!
Don't get frustrated! Resistance 2 definitely features some tough sections, but there's a way to get through. Just relax, check the guide, and try again.
Prologue: Iceland
With Nathan Hale evacuated from London, the US army transports him to a remote research base in Iceland. Unfortunately, his arrival is greeted by an onslaught of Chimeran forces that shoot his helicopter transport down, prompting him back into action much sooner than expected.
India Eight-Two Crash Site
Following the helicopter's crash landing, Major Blake outfits you with a HE .44 Magnum and instructs you to follow him into the SRPA compound. Moving forward toward the massive Goliath, hop up the short ridge and head to the left after Maj. Blake. There's a checkpoint immediately before you stumble onto the fringe of the facility: a cluster of aluminum buildings that mark the start of the in-game tutorial. Jump up to the building's deck and enter to receive instructions from Maj. Blake. Fire a shot from your Magnum on the propane tank in front of the door at the other end of the building to proceed. Note that you can either shoot the tank several times to make it explode or simply shoot it once, following it up with a blast from the gun's secondary fire (which is what Maj. Blake instructs).
As soon as you blast open the door, three hybrids appear. Quickly fire a couple shots at them, using the secondary fire if necessary. With the room cleared, you can equip the L210 LAARK to fire a rocket at the Goliath. Complete Maj. Blake's order to strike the Goliath's rear exhaust port. Naturally, this angers it and causes it to turn its attention to your flimsy little abode. Once Maj. Blake stops talking, rush out the door, between the two vehicles, and through the drainage pipe--don't dally about, as you will get fired upon by the Goliath! There's a Bullseye you can pick up, but first switch to your LAARK so that you swap it out for the Bullseye instead of the Magnum.
Crouch under the grating to continue following Maj. Blake deeper into the compound. Saddle up next to him at a pile of red pipes. A swarm of about a dozen hybrids will rush you, so pop up for quick shots. If you begin to take damage, duck back down for cover and allow yourself to heal up. It helps to use the tagging secondary fire on the Bullseye to target a hybrid and then duck back down to fire. Move forward through the field once you've taken care of all the hybrids.
Detention Wing
Following Maj. Blake, you come to a metal walkway with two hybrids taking a vantage point high up on the opposite side. Take them out before venturing across the walkway since another wave of hybrids comes once you cross the walkway. Walk across and take cover to the right. Dealing with this second set is actually pretty easy with the Magnum. As the first hybrid runs toward you, peak out and fire off a shot. Wait until his buddies are right on top of him and pull the secondary fire explosive round. You can also use the Bullseye, but it isn't nearly as fun as blasting hybrids sky high.
Continue to follow Maj. Blake into the detention wing. Chimera drones populate the first area of the sandbagged sector, which are best eliminated using the Bullseye. Switch to is and zoom in to quickly down them. They are nasty little things that can whittle health away fast, so focus on nailing them quickly. With the room cleared, Maj. Blake moves forward into the complex to unlock a door. Defend him against another wave of drones. The hallway you're confined to actually serves as a beneficial bottleneck. Pop out from the left side of the door to shoot at the drones until their gone. Of course, it's only once you've destroyed all the drones that the door opens. The next room contains a group of easily killed hybrids. Use the same strategy as before, popping out from the sides of the door to take shots on the three hybrids within. With the room clear, Maj. Blake enters the heart of the detention wing. After dropping down into the wing, immediately turn around and kill off the three hybrids that followed you in.
A short cutscene plays and you're once again prompted to follow Maj. Blake. [INTEL #2: The broken metal walkway in the containment cell goes two ways, of which you need to take the ramp to the left. Head up to the catwalk and walk to the end of it to collect the case.] Go up the metal staircase in the opposite direction from where you found the Intel document, through the viewing room, and then drop down through an opening to the left. On the floor in front of you is a M5A2 Folsom Carbine you can pick up, but it's best to skip it. Down the hall, a squad of hybrids begin streaming past propane tanks that are easily blown by shots from your Magnum. Keep moving down the hallway and kill all the hybrids. This is a great spot to rack up indirect explosion kills for the "Mind Your Surroundings" trophy.
SRPA Airfield
Keep on Maj. Blake until you reach a LAARK pick up. Swap out one of your weapons (recommended: keep your Magnum, drop the Bullseye) and target the Goliath. Don't fire until it turns its back toward you; with the exhaust ports in sight, shoot the sucker. Like before, it pisses him off and you're forced to hightail it out of there after Maj. Blake. You have to sprint to keep up with him, otherwise you're liable to lose him and then killed by the Goliath's fire. Follow directly behind and you'll be just fine.
Once you escape from the Goliath's firing sights, cross a broken bridge by mimicking Maj. Blake's path. Move along the ravine's rocky edge until you reach a concrete bunker. [INTEL #1: Walk forward as soon as you enter the bunker to grab the document at the end of the hallway.] Go through the door to your right after collecting the document. There should be another door to a few steps to the right of the one you just went through. A bunch of hybrids await you on the other side of that one, so cock your Magnum and prep your secondary fire finger. With those enemies gone, you can pick up the LAARK at the end of the bunker and use it to fire on the Goliath one last time. Follow Maj. Blake to the evacuation point and the mission ends.
Mission 1: San Francisco
Now that the SRPA station in Iceland has been overrun, Hale and the rest of the evacuating forces head to San Francisco. Maj. Blake explains that Hale will join an elite group within the military called the Sentinels--human soldiers who have been infected with the Chimera virus like him.
Tactical Command
Upon waking up from surgery and receiving a stern warning from Dr. Malikov regarding inhibitor treatments, you take control of Hale. Follow Warner to the Tactical Command room where Maj. Blake is waiting. The conversation doesn't last long--a kraken attempting to bust through the underwater facility prompts you to rush out of the room and begin the mission to clear out Chimer forces from the base.
Move forward through the hallway and take a left to proceed into a flooded room. The water teems with invincible furies--swimming Chimera that can instantly kill you. As such, steer clear of the water and take the broken metal walkway across. Once through the room, you should see a Magnum and air fuel grenade for pick up. Continue through the flooded hallway to encounter light hybrid resistance. You can use the air fuel grenade, but it's better to save it and just use your Magnum. With the hybrids down, you automatically grab a Bullseye. You may also enter the side room to the right to equip a Carbine. Either work fine, although if you're wanting to get the "Exotic Weapon Collector" trophy, using the Carbine for a few kills is a good idea here. [INTEL #6: The final room on the right houses another set of documents.]
