For your second trip on the catapult, use it at the steepest angle. Land on the platform and immediately run to the right. You should encounter a trio of crates mounted onto the ceiling and wall that can be fired upon to prompted a piece of cardboard. Place the spider sticker on it to receive four prize bubbles. Now head all the way to the left to access an elevator. Hit the checkpoint at the center of the elevator to make it rise. It will make three stops, so prepare yourself for turret fire by positioning yourself near one of the three alcoves on the elevator.
At the first stop, you only need to defeat a solitary turret on the right. Destroy it and the elevator moves up another floor. The second stop features two turrets on the left: one on the ground, the other on the ceiling. This is slightly trickier since you need to time your shots to avoid their green fireballs. Once they're ashes, the elevator continues up to the third floor. Here you contend against two turrets and a stationary tank. Focus on the tank first, watching the patterns of attack to find openings from which you can pop out of the alcoves and fire. Be patient and take your time.
With those enemies gone, the elevator takes you up to fourth floor, women's lingerie and a new type of turret. This one launches a full wave of fireballs before resting a few moments. Steer clear of the firewall and pop out from cover to shoot at the turret when it's taking a break. It's rather easy. Four floors down, one to go! The fifth stop features a wave turret on the right and a ceiling unit on the left. Deal with the wave turret first, waiting to shoot when it's resting. With it gone, it's cake taking out the other one. The elevator now takes you to the top where you can collect the remaining prize bubbles behind each of the five diamond-triggered doors.
100% Prize Bubbles: Every one of the 36 prize bubbles situated in the level can be gathered in one run if you follow the guide above.
Ace: This is probably the hardest of the levels to ace because you can't avoid fighting the turrets, particularly during the elevator sequence. That said, it's not as hard as you might think. Concentrating your paintball fire and taking your time are the best strategies for making it through alive. Follow the walkthrough above to get through, paying extra care not to die, obviously.
:: Mission 5: The Boss
Ah-ha! So Liquid Ocelot is behind all the level spamming. Well, let's take him out. Defeating him is going to tough, though, since he's riding in Metal Gear Rex. First, angle your Paintinator to reach the initial weak spot at the machine's rear. Jam on R1 quickly to lob as many paintballs as possible. Immediately after it is destroyed, explosive barrels fall from above; just keep firing paintballs to destroy them before they reach the floor. After that, avoid the green fireballs that it fires by jumping over them or walking out of the way. Next, situate yourself next to the first leg and prepare to shoot when the weak point there appears. Be careful to avoid the shots it lobs at you. The third weak point appears after Metal Gear Rex fires satellite beams that destroy sections of the platform you're standing on. Avoid the beams and unload paintballs on the weak spot that opens up at the center of the machine.
As soon as it goes down, jump to the opposite end of the room. Jump up to the next field onto the platform there. All of the other platforms will fall down and you're left in a shielded box to face Metal Gear Rex and its final weak point. Hitting it means jumping up and firing paintballs when green fireballs are not flying overhead. You can also jump onto a small ledge on the left of the platform and angle your Paintinator to shoot the spot. Either way works. Once Metal Gear Rex falls, move to the end of the stage and collect the final prize bubble of the level pack. Good work, soldier!
100% Prize Bubbles: The sole prize bubble in this level is automatically revealed once you beat Metal Gear Rex.
Ace: Staying alive in the fight against Metal Gear Rex is much easier than you'd initially think. Trying to survive against its attacks on the first go will be difficult since you need to understand the attack patterns to effectively evade them. You can both ace the level and unlock the "Speedy Rexecutioner" trophy at the same time, which is highly recommended. Use the guide for the trophy as a way of acing the level. If you'd rather not be pressed by the clock when attempting to ace the level, it's advisable to commit the machine's attack patterns to memory. With that in mind, fire as many paintballs as possible when a weak point appears and do your best to avoid green fireballs and the satellite beam midway through the battle.
Trophies
:: Paint Sharer (Bronze): Publish a level containing the Metal Gear Solid Paintinator Power-up
As the description instructs, you need to create and then publish an original level to unlock. The easiest way to do this is insert the Paintinator into a level you're already created and republish it.
:: Metal Gear Solid Booty Master (Bronze): Collect all of the Metal Gear Solid prize bubbles
This trophy takes some effort beyond just running through the five acts. Some prize bubbles require you to use stickers earned in later levels, which means playing through some levels twice is necessary. Use the guide above to locate every prize bubble.
:: Thrifty Painter (Bronze): Complete Act 3: The Mission firing less than 125 paintballs
Resist the inclination to go through the level counting the number of paintballs you fire. Not only will it drive you insane, but you can unlock this trophy with a decent margin in the number of paintballs you use. The key is bypassing enemies instead of battling them. Getting through the first section of the level with the searchlights is easy enough since you don't receive the Paintinator until after this sequence. Once you equip it, though, it's time to be frugal with your fire.
The first enemy you face is a stationary turret. Kill it by firing paintballs one-by-one directly at it; it should take 8-9 shots. The two turrets immediately following it do not need to be defeated. Instead, you want to time it so that you jump over both in quick succession. Examine their firing patterns to discern the best moment to run and leap over them. Use the alcoves lining the walls as protection as you study them. The same tactic can be used to avoid firing at the next pair of turrets, although this time you're dealing with one stationed on the ground and one above. Again, time your jump careful to exploit the small window of opportunity afforded by their attack pattern.
After catapulting yourself up to the next area, you contend with two ceiling turrets, a stationary one ahead, and another below that you can't quite view but still fires nonetheless. The first is easily avoided; wait for the turret to retract than run underneath it. The second is a little trickier. While you can do the same as the first one, you also need to time it so you avoid incoming fire from the turret on the ground ahead and shots from the turret in the hole below. Don't worry if you die, just try again; examine the patterns of attack and figure out exactly when to jump when there aren't any fireballs blocking your way. Once you jump across, you have another easy turret to walk underneath before you come to a series of platforms activated by paintball fire. Aim carefully, using one paintball per platform. Drop down the left side, and then jump up the platforms on the right to continue.
With the turrets behind you, there are bigger fish to fry: tanks. Amazingly, you're going to avoid battling them by exploiting the alcoves situated along the back wall. With the first tank, walk close to it and jump up to plane in the background. Wait for it to pass by you on the left and then jump into the foreground. Quickly run to the right and jump into the first alcove with the rounded ceiling. From there, wait for the right moment when the space between to the two tanks passes you. Use it to quickly move to the next alcove. When the second tank moves to the left, you can run out of the alcove and to the final area.
Before finishing the level, you have to defeat a mini-boss tank using as few paintballs as possible. This is where conservation of shots in the rest of the level pays off since you should have more than enough paintballs to get the job done. You have two targets: the tank's turret at the top and its base. The keys to defeating both are using the alcoves for cover when the turret fires and wise aiming. You don't want to waste any paintballs if you don't have to, so it's best to fire one at a time; that way, if your aim is off you can adjust it without having wasted a bunch of paintballs by jamming on R1. Once the turret has been taken out, explosives will get hurled at you. Do not shoot at them! Avoid them to the best of your ability. If you die, not a problem--just keep pressing the base with single shots until you defeat it. With it in ashes, mosey on out of the room to finish the level and receive your trophy.
:: Diamond Hunter (Bronze): Destroy the 5 hidden target diamonds in Act 4: The Level Factory
As the description highlights, there are five diamonds that you must shoot in the level. Here are the locations:
1. Immediately after cross the Sackboy sign, look up and fire on the first diamond.
2. In the section after the first diamond is a series of three paintball-activated lifts that hang from a ceiling. On top of that ceiling is the second diamond. You can climb onto it using one of the lifts right before the ceiling starts.
3. After encountering the first tank in the level, you come across a series of turrets. In between the two turrets mounted on the ceilings of alcoves is the third diamond. Note that you have to jump into the background and shoot in order to get it.
4. After jumping up through the lifts to higher ground, you will reach a checkpoint. Directly above this checkpoint on the rooftop is the fourth diamond. You can reach it by jumping up into the background to the left of the checkpoint.
5. The final diamond can be reached by using the catapult at its lowest angle. Instead of launching yourself to the next area and finishing the level, fling yourself to the space beneath it to access the fifth diamond.
:: Paint Splurge (Bronze): Fire 5,000 paintballs
The first of two easy paintball trophies, you're likely to unlock this in your play through the five acts.
:: Ace Act 5: The Boss (Bronze): Ace Act 5: The Boss
As mentioned in the walkthrough, acing this final battle is easier than you'd think. It's recommended that you attempt to unlock the "Speedy Rexecutioner" trophy at the same time since it essentially demands that you complete the battle without dying. The strategy outlined for that trophy is ideal for defeating Metal Gear Rex without losing a life. The key to surviving is watching the attack patterns and always avoiding attacks. Your priority should be on evading the attack, then attacking. If you focus on trying to attack, you're more likely to die.
:: Ace Act 3 and Act 4 (Bronze): Ace Act 3: The Mission and Act 4: The Level Factory
Acing Act 3: Bypassing enemies instead of fighting them saves you the headache of risking your neck; on the other hand, there are some enemies that are easier to kill than avoid. Getting through the first section of the level with the searchlights is easy enough since you can sneak around them to avoid any danger. Once through, you equip the Paintinator and start encountering enemies.
The first series of enemies you face are stationary turrets. Stay back from them and kill them with paintballs. You can try jumping over them, but that's riskier than just shooting them from afar. This first sequence has five turrets, all of which are easier to destroy than bypass. In the next section, however, you're better served by avoiding a couple of the turrets and only destroy a few. The ones mounted in the ceiling need to go, as does the one on the platform across the way. The one firing from below, however, should be ignored.
When you get to the tanks, it's easier to use the alcoves to avoid them then take them on.
