Before we get down to this business we call vengeance, McCall-style, I have a cautionary question for the completionists out there. Do you really need the full 1,000 points for maximum glory? Will the 960 for skipping Very Hard difficulty not suffice? Are you prepared to lose your friends, your family, and fall asleep every night with an empty bottle and a dirty glass? I hope so, because there’s no way your coming out of this unscathed.

Misc. Achievement Tips

Ray’s Story, Thomas’ Story, Old West Legend – I highly recommend using Thomas for your first playthrough. Beating the game will then unlock the very hard difficulty. Ray is considerably more resilient than his brother, and on very hard, surviving beyond a single bullet is an immeasurable luxury.

None Shall Hide – The obstruction doesn’t have to be a wall. Shooting through the edge of a crate or through a door also counts toward this achievement.

High Noon – You might have to bring your console to work, because this is based on real-world time. You have between 12 and 12:15pm.

Chapter I

It’s time to get down to business and kill some blue-belly Yanks. Wait, I’m a Yankee… Although Chapter I is a glorified tutorial, it has a full cache of Secrets and will give you a strong start in your Achievements.

Secret – You defend the flanks from the trenches and are instructed to go through the “stuck door” to clear out the camp. As soon as the door gets unstuck, via Ray’s boot, turn left and open the chest on the ground.

Secret – En route to the officers’ tent, after dealing with the two snipers, take a break in the camp’s commons area. This is the area with a flag, fire pits, and a few places to sit. A chest is next to the first of three sideways tents in this area.

Secret – Leave it to Ray to brazenly volunteer for a suicide mission and come out alive. The guy is a 19th-century Bruce Willis. He’s bent on taking the trenches back. The officer he speaks with describes it as a “meat grinder” and directs Ray to a watery path leading there. To the right of the entrance, next to the stream is a chest.

Achievement #28 Quick Hands – You came to rescue your brother and find yourself at the bad end of a full assault. The obvious solution is to get on the Gatling gun and mow them down. That’ll certainly work, but it has no style. Using your pistols, shoot just enough blue-bellies to get your Concentration maxed out. Duck down and give the field a few seconds to fill up with soldiers again. When you count at least seven, pop up and do your best impression of Wild Bill.

Achievement #18 D-Day – Don’t do what I did and mistake the little spots on the water for patches of reeds. They are small “rafts” in the most literal sense, and they will cross from shore to shore at points between the far right and the fallen tree to the left. When using the cannon, the cross-hair is only a loose guide that doesn’t account for arc trajectory. As you visually patrol the shores, keep a close eye on the middle. There always seems to be an unnaturally quick and stealthy raft that makes it across. If you see any soldiers coming up the beach at this point, reload the last checkpoint.

Secret – If Clint Eastwood can do it, so can you. Make your way below the bridge to rig the dynamite. The faster you move, the fewer opponents there will be. Next to the detonation site is a rock with a dead soldier on it. He is clutching the secret in his hand.

Chapter II

Now you’ll learn how to use Thomas’ hammer-fanning brand of Concentration. Unfortunately, Thomas is limited to six-rounds (seemingly even when he gains access to pistols with greater ammo-counts), making the previous Quick Hands achievement out of his grasp, but he does get incredible range. He also has a few knife-tricks for the ladies. Knives have an auto-targeting reticule when you get in range, and the reticule will move to a lethal headshot if you hold for a second or two.

Achievement #19 Yankee Cow – Save Jackson from the fire and meet Ray at the stable to inspect the noise. Don’t shoot when the doors open, unless you wish to incur the wrath of PETA.

Secret – On the first floor of the stable, where you almost Coop-killed a cow, there is a chest in the corner stable to the right.

Secret – You exit the stable just in time to see Jackson running like a lunatic across the field. Whether you take the Yankee soldiers head-on or snipe from the rooftops is a matter of preference, but don’t forget to inspect the slave-houses along the way. You can’t make it back if you go too far. Look for a chest under the kitchen table in the third house.

Secret – At the slave-houses, you will find a chest in the attic of the second-to-last house.

Achievement #20 Catcher in the Rye – There are six Yankees in the field. Take a quick look at the trees behind them to use as navigational guides and hit the dirt. Under no circumstances can you get up, even for a quick peek. I found it easiest to head for the dead tree on the left since it is the most noticeable. Pan your crosshairs back and forth slightly and watch for red flashes. When you find a soldier, remember to hold your aim for a second for a headshot. Next, you should be able to move in a clockwise arc to find the rest of the squad, making sure to count how many are left. The soldiers move surprisingly slow, so don’t worry if you can’t find some of them right away. If you are having difficulties and don’t mind a little waiting, you might even consider letting the soldiers come to you.

Achievement #29 Frag Steal – There is a Cooperative Concentration at the entrance to the McCall house. While this Achievement can be awarded in 10 other chapters, it is easier to get sooner than later. Unlike later chapters, this is still a learning scenario and you will only have to perform minimal adjustments to targeting, if any at all.

Secret – Inside the McCall house, you will find a chest in the second floor hallway next to a cabinet.

Secret – Poor mother, but there’s no time for mourning. You have to leave. Instead of taking the stairs, hop out the nearby window and turn right on the balcony to find a chest.
