Hudson Entertainment today announced plans to launch an updated version of Lode Runner on cellphones. Dubbed "Lode Runner Deluxe," the new version of the game is expected to launch on both Brew and Java platforms in the North American market during fall 2006.
Originally created by Doug Smith, Lode Runner launched on the Apple 2 in 1983. The game featured cleverly designed levels, and pick-up-and-play gameplay that quickly became a hit among gamers. Unlike other games, gamers could not directly attack enemies in this game. Much of the gameplay mechanic is based around digging holes, either to dig for treasure, to escape an enemy, or to trap an enemy. This aspect was what truly separated it from any other. Over the years, numerous versions of the game have launched on multiple platforms. Hudson Soft later developed the game for NES, which became the first million unit seller on that system, as well as Lode Runner for the PS2, which featured 3D levels. Since then, Hudson Entertainment has launched Lode Runner on cellphones, and is now planning to update the game with Lode Runner Deluxe.
Lode Runner Deluxe promises an all new art style, classic Lode Runner gameplay and up to 50 levels initially with new levels available each month. You can learn more about the game by checking out
