From Rogue Pictures comes a horror/thriller film that not only has a different kind of concept but enough twists to keep you mis-guessing the plot right up until the end. And being one who usually sees the end right near the beginning of these mystery movies, I’m always pleased to watch one that I don’t figure correctly. When young Owen (Julian Morris) transfers to West Lake Prep high School he finds himself with a new group of friends that play a new kind of game. Lead by young Owen's new object of affection Dodger (Lindy Booth) the game consists of trying to convince your friends with random lies with out getting caught. It’s a game with three simple rules; avoid suspicion, lie to your friends and eliminate your enemies, but after the body of a local girl is found in the woods the police are keeping the investigation pretty hush-hush which therefore gives Owen and his friends the idea to expand their game of WOLF to a new level.
The new version of the game is to try to convince the student body that the girl that was killed was murdered by a serial killer that preys on schools with the same M.O. every time, and that he has come to their school to start over.. but when the murders they forecast were going to happen actually start happening no one knows who the killer is and why hes emulating the viscous murders that were supposed to be a hoax. All this leaves the tightly knit group of friends pointing fingers at each other and also leaves them in a state of confusion. But if you think their confused to the identity of the killer you’ll find yourself even more so while you watch.
Although this DVD is the unrated version there's not very much blood or violence, that aspect was mostly left up to imagination. But some of the ways that the students lose their lives is very creative to say the least, and without giving to much away the student who dies after getting his genitals cut off with a bowie knife will make the toughest of guys wince with sympathy. But regardless the lack of gore isn’t missed all that much with the creative ways these scenes were put together. Also you’ll notice there is not any really huge names in Cry Wolf, although these actors have each been in a few films they are not the big names you're used to seeing on the big screen and for the most part they did a great job of nailing their characters. The only name in the film I had a problem with, and I don’t mean to offend any fans of his music, was Jon Bon Jovi who played Rich Walker the high schools journalism professor, who in my opinion should stick to his day job as he did a very poor job of trying to act in this film.
The other problem I saw with the actors (through no fault of their own) is that they are a little to old to look like high school students; the casting director for this film should have put a little more thought into his age choices or they should have set this at a college. But with those very small negatives aside I would have to say this is a very good overall film. And for those of you who like to emphatically state who the killer is so you can brag at the end -- when you're right I suggest you keep your mouths shut for this one. As I stated this movie keeps you guessing right until the end especially with the constant hints being dropped that may occasionally mislead you.
If you're wondering what this movie is based on you’ll be able to find that out on one of the bonus features of this DVD if you watch The Tower Of Babble which is the award winning short film that led to Cry Wolf. The other extras you’ll find include deleted and alternate scenes, a tour with actor Julian Morris titled Enter The Sinister Set, commentary with the film director, and much more. As far as the bonus material goes some of its pretty neat and worth watching if you like the film.
So in closing if you like horror/thriller films with a really strong "who done it" twist then I recommend checking this one out its released on DVD by Rogue Pictures on December 20th and is rated PG-13, it has a runtime of 90 minutes (this review is for the un-rated version).
