The 40 Year Old Virgin released is one of the funnier comedies to come out in a while. As a matter of fact the comedy genre as a whole has seen very few new movies worth watching lately. So after some reserve I have finally sat down and watched the DVD and I'm glad I did so.
Meet Andy Sitzer (Steve Carrel), a guy that looks like he’s pretty much got life under control including a job at an electronics store that he likes, his own apartment and even a pretty amazing collection of action figures. The only thing that's missing in his life is a girl and not only for a little while - as a matter of fact in Andy’s 40 years he’s had on this planet he has "been: with a girl in the biblical sense. But he seems to be fine with this. It is only when his co-workers find out and convince him he should be trying to lose his purity that he realizes this is a problem. Luckily for him his friends decide to make it their personal goal to rid him of his apparently menacing virginity.
Of course it sounds relatively simple but it proves to be quite the difficult task. Nevertheless, armed with the tools of knowledge that his friends have enlightened him with, Andy makes his first attempts at locating a woman that will help him realize manhood. During his co-mingling with the opposite sex he meets an enchanting woman, Trish (Catherine Keener), who he wants to date and of course they have an instant connection with one another, partially due to the fact that she doesn't know he's a virgin. As an added bonus Trish wants to abstain from sex to focus on building a relationship which he gladly accepts as a great idea in order to buy himself additional time. So this film shows Andy’s mis-adventures of learning the secrets of women.
I must admit this is not a wholesome comedy for the whole family to enjoy as it is filled with nudity and some extremely foul language, but it is a great movie for us adults who know how much those things can add to a comedy if there properly placed. In addition to a pretty great script, the cornucopia of characters that are thrown together really compliment one another making this film that much better.
I really enjoyed the role of Cal played by Seth Rogan (who co- produced ). Rogan is otherwise a pretty much unknown actor other than some bit work in a few movies as well as TV series. This character is depicted as the gruff wise-ass who says inappropriate things at the wrong times to women and it still seems to work for him. His "I don't care" bad boy attitude and opinions about woman though obviously sexist add a great deal of humor to his character. I really enjoyed character a lot and look forward to seeing what other characters he can play in a comedic setting. Now what I really think makes this film so funny is the dialogue or banter between all the co-workers at the electronics store. There’s definitely some one liners and strange phrases that will be emulated and used by people for a couple of years to come. Im also not going to be surprised when I see the director/writer Judd Apatow involved in a lot of great work in the future.
Considering this is pretty much his directorial debut I'd say he's proved he has a great caliber of work. Apatow has been around for a while mind you almost always in the comedy field you may know him from his writing work on the animated series The Critic or his writing on a show called the Larry Sanders Show. He also co-wrote a 1996 film With Colin Quinn that I consider a classic comedy called Celtic Pride which starred Damon Wayans, Daniel Stern, and Dan Akroyd. So Apatow not new to Hollywood and hopefully this film will give him the popularity to be involved in more things and maybe put a little charge back into a genre that in my opinion is fading.
So in closing if you enjoy a good adult comedy and your looking for something new and worth watching I recommend this film. As a matter of fact to anyone who is a big comedy buff I consider this film a must see. The unrated DVD has some real great extras including 17 minutes of never before seen footage, additional deleted scenes which were deemed too dirty for the film (which after you've seen the movie really says a lot), also there’s My Dinner with Stormy which consists of actor/co-producer Seth Rogen having dinner with adult film star Stormy Daniels. There’s also gag reels and never seen before footage of "you know how I know your gay" the infamous routine from the film. You’ll also see Line-o-Rama which is a montage of alternate jokes from different scenes, there are multiple commentary tracks featuring filmmakers and cast... and much more. Needless to say Universal definitely didn’t skimp on the extras for this DVD. The unrated version of The 40 Year Old Virgin is on sale in stores everywhere now.
