Bonus Round: Sourceforge
Why should the average gamer care about
sourceforge.net
?
Because if you take the time to look, and dig deep enough, chances are you will find a game or product that will absolutely steal your attention. Some of the best community developed games I have ever played, I found by sifting through Sourceforge's games section. These games include Exult (a wonderful remake of Ultima VII), Egoboo (a Nethack style RPG highlighted in a previous column), UFO 2000 (a multiplayer enabled tactical strategy game based on UFO: Enemy Unknown), GL Tron, and many other titles.
I'll be the first to admit that half of these projects are just in conceptual stages and probably won't make it to the end of the development cycle, but for every 20 or so half-done games, there's usually one that is worth taking a look at. The downside to these kinds of games is that many of them require some setup beyond clicking the install button, which may keep average gamers away. But for those willing to do a little tweaking and a little bit of leg work, Sourceforge is a gold mine!
And that's all for this week. Thanks for reading - catch it again in soon. As always, questions or comments are welcomed - send them along to
