For those of you who don’t think that’s enough new downloads, we’re not done yet. There’s a new Guitar Hero track pack (#4) which has three songs and will set you back $6, a Texas Hold ‘Em update which will finally support the Live Vision Camera (hey, only took a year), a “jungle party” environment for Hold ‘Em, and then finally there’s a surprise backward compatibility update which will make NBA Live 2002 playable on your 360. Aren’t you glad you didn’t trade it in to EB for 29 cents now (and Justice League Heroes is playable on the 360! Yay! – ed)?
PlayStation Store
Moving along to the PlayStation store, it’s time to play my favorite game: “find the new content.” Thankfully Sony puts all the new content on a sidebar on the right of the screen with the date added. However, due to E3, there’s more content there than there are lines available, so they’ve added an E3 folder on the store. Some of the things that are there, you’ve seen before so it may or may not be new. Oh yeah, there’s also a new game added to the store. It’s called “Nucleus” and it will set you back $10. My advice is to try the demo and save yourself the $10. On the bright side, at least there’s an actual game available at the PS Store.
But wait, there’s more. That’s right, we have new addon content available for the game Spider-Man 3. It’s a new Goblin playable character, and I’ll leave it to you to decide if it’s worth $5.99 to get. You know what I’m going to say, but then again, I paid $6 to play three new songs in Guitar Hero, so some people may refer to me as “an idiot.”
That’s all of the playable downloadable content for this week but as I alluded earlier, in order that all gamers may enjoy the E3 experience there will be a new game out for the Wii that uses the Balance Board. Actually it’s two games – E3 the 2000 edition and E3 the 2007 edition. In the 2000 Edition, you’ll have to walk fast on the Wii Balance Board as you’re in the main section of the LA Convention Center talking with EA and just realized you have to be at an appointment seemingly 23 miles away in Kentia Hall in 2 ½ minutes. Needless to say, you’ll be hitting that Balance Board hard. In E3 2007, the Balance Board is the size of the game showing room and you’ll have to move and attempt to get a soda without falling off the balance board and avoid knocking over the developer kit the beta game is running on.
Alright, that wasn’t really a new game announced for the Wii, but if it were it would sell millions, because it’s a Wii game that uses the balance board, and I had to make something up since there weren’t any Wii trailers. I’ll now talk about the real stuff…
Special E3 2007 Content
Microsoft has put up a special E3 section on Marketplace which basically means if it was released within the last week, it’s there. Stuff that wasn’t actually ‘released’ at E3, like the Grand Theft Auto IV demo, is in there; making it a nice place to check out if you were living under a rock. At press time, there were a mere fifty-eight (58) items in that folder and thanks to the power of my Xbox Elite, I grabbed all the ones that didn’t cost me anything. Now six of the 58 files is the Microsoft E3 press conference, so if you just had to see five Halo fans playing music, you can. Most of the other trailers are game-centric and for those that enjoy Cliff’s Notes over the full book, I recommend you download the montage videos – especially the Live Arcade one. It’s a quick way to see everything that’s coming up for the 360. Dying for more? I thought you would be, so make sure you see the Assassin’s Creed trailer, the Call of Duty 4 trailer and Beautiful Katamari. Some may enjoy the Halo 3 video, but I believe the game really needs to be played in order to be truly enjoyed.
Not wanting to look like they copied Microsoft, Sony has instead copied Microsoft. (Note to editor: crude attempt at Monty Pythonesque humor). Using their own E3 folder, they have three ‘pages’ of E3 material and the first priority for PS3 owners should be to download the Killzone trailer. As they say past performance may not indicate future results, but damn if this plays anything like it looks, there may be a reason to own a PS3. Well that, and this little known game called Metal Gear Solid 4. After watching the trailer I guess I was in the minority: yes, it looked good and there was plenty of action but the game looked colorless, bland and I’ve already played enough slow-motion fighting games. I hope for the best and usually with the MGS franchise, they don’t disappoint, unless we’re talking about bizarre card games. One Sony demo I laughed at was the High Velocity Bowling trailer, not for the reason Sony was hoping for. It just looked dumb. If you aren’t bowling on the Wii, you might as well play the Atari 2600 game and get the same thrill. Anyway, I’m sure you’ll find something worth downloading.
I do want to give kudos to both Sony and Microsoft who don’t seem to have download capacity issues. Both consoles downloaded the trailers with relative ease and that was a big surprise!
