Welcome to the Tokyo Game Show edition of This Week In Downloads. Even though Microsoft jumped the gun last week with their own big news (presumably leaving the good times to Sony this week), there’s still plenty of gaming news to go around. The big news was that Sony is releasing a DualShock 3 controller, so those of you that held out on purchasing Super Stardust HD or GripShift because of a lack of rumble, you have won, although you can’t enjoy the fruits of your victory until Spring 2008 when the controller is released in America. Go figure.
PlayStation Store
Sticking with our Sony friends, the PlayStation updates are really looking healthy on Thursdays – the biggest problem now is that with all of the games being released Thursday afternoon, it seems as though download speeds come to a crawl. Perhaps it would make more sense to release one new item per day rather than six games at the same time, no?
Anyway, once you do get the downloads going, you’ll be able to play new demos of Skate, Sega Rally Revo (not Revolution, but Revo), Stuntman: Ignition, and Sony’s NBA 08. Interesting side note about NBA 08: read the description. Actually, I’ll type it for you: “And if you’re looking to live the life of an NBA player on and off the court, be sure to check out The Life v3 exclusively in NBA 08 for the PlayStation 2 system.” Notice anything funny there? If you said they are telling me about a feature that’s not even in the game I’m trying to download, you are correct. Maybe they should allow you to download a PS2 version of the game! Anyway, NBA Live 08 still looks like the game to beat, but you might as well download this one and check it out. The other games, well I’ve already seen them on the 360. Sega Rally looks good (maybe better) here on the PS3 and the controls seem more crisp (maybe it has something to do with a lack of rumble heh). Stuntman has it’s moments but I’m not all that excited about the game and finally Skate was surprisingly enjoyable, so check that one out.
There’s also a new downloadable game called LocoRoco Cocoreccho and unfortunately there’s no demo, so you’ll have to decide if it’s worth the $6.99 download. With most reviews calling the game a “screensaver,” I passed.
Wii Shop Channel
As is tradition, Nintendo released three Virtual Console games: Yoshi’s Story, a Nintendo 64 game which received mediocre ratings nine years ago; Super Thunder Blade , a Genesis game that wasn’t great when it was first released and looks downright fugly now; and a Turbo Grafx 16 game called World Class Baseball which plays pretty well considering it was made in 1989. It does have some odd quirks like a very big strike zone, but I did play through a few games. If it were 1989, I’d be playing it more; but since it’s 2007, I feel like I just burned $6.
GameTap
GameTap released four new titles, most notably the Sierra classic Aces Over Europe. I remember playing that game back in the day on all those damn floppy discs…now you can just download it. I’m old. Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord , Gods: Lands Of Infinity and Eidos’ Project Eden round out the slim pickings’ this week. Aces is still Aces in my book though, so grab it.
