Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee 2 Post Mortem Interview
We catch up with the Associate Producer of the Hot Shots series in this post mortem interview.
Date: Wednesday, July 30, 2008
Author: Brendon Lindsey

Do you think Hot Shots appeals more to real golfers, or people who really don’t have the chance to hit the links too often?

Both really… non-traditional golfers can get a kick out of the Hot Shots craziness and real-life golf players can take advantage of the real world physics -- that has always been one of the technical strong points in the game (in fact, of the overall Hot Shots franchise as well): we always come across golf players that have gotten hooked on the game after realizing how realistic the game feels.

What happened to the brunette desk girl from the first Open Tee? How could you just get rid of her like that with no explanation in regards to her fate!

If you want her number, all you have to do is ask. I heard she’s taken some time off and is now looking into modeling… fyi, she likes puppies, long walks and poetry… that’s all I’ll do for you… and no, I wont be your wingman.

I’ve fallen in love with playing the Wi-Fi mode against people, and look forward to more people getting the game so that they can beat me as well. Tell me, why did you guys wait until Open Tee 2 to add that? Was that just a limitation with early PSP development, or did you not have time to implement Wi-Fi the first time around?

Every title has something special that makes the player “fall in love with it” so to speak… the first Open Tee introduced a really enjoyable way to play golf on the go, which crazy characters, customizable options and unique courses. The experience we were going for translated perfectly and the players were more than happy to partake in the party. So in a way, concentrating on certain features we felt would make a great experience, also helped us have a solid base to build off with Open Tee 2. Now you’ll have double the courses, double the characters, more customizable options and Wi-Fi, a new feature we felt would round off the Open Tee 2 experience.

I’m sure you’ve had a chance to play Wi-Fi with Open Tee 2 pretty extensively by now. Tell me, who’s the best person you’ve played online? And if I wanted to have a chance to beat anyone on the Hot Shots team, who should I challenge?

Me. I’ll see you online, my nickname is…

In all honestly, there are so many good players out there – but by far some of the guys that have given everyone a run for their money are the folks in our QA team. Those guys (and girls) spend so much time with the title, it’s almost impossible to pull an utter defeat on them. Even if you do win, it’ll be a long drawn-out bloody mess. Then there’s our team from Japan – they are extremely good too.

As far as challenging a few of the top players, I’m sure you can start rustling a few feathers over at [shameless plug] the Hot Shots Golf forum . There are plenty of players there that I’m fairly sure would take your lunch money…

Are there any features or modes you guys wanted to add to Open Tee 2 that you just didn’t have the chance to put in?

Once you start on the design process, thousands of ideas are pitched, but due to gameplay features, expected outcome and initial goals set for the title – some features, end up getting the axe… but not because we didn’t have a chance to put it in… it all goes back to creating an unforgettable experience and concentrating on the features that will help us achieve that.

Before I let you go, you have to let me know: are there any plans yet for an Open Tee 3 yet?

Plans? There are always plans...
