11. Clock Tower: The First Fear; Human Entertainment; PSX; 1997
Since we are picking individual scenes, I couldn't choose just one from Fatal Frame 2 so here are my choices from other titles. I’m going to have to say it’s a toss up between Clock Tower for the PSX and Silent Hill 3 for the PS2. The two scenes that stick out the most in my mind for freaking the hell right out of me were simplistic in nature but to this day left one hell of a lasting impression.
It’s not bad enough that there’s a killer on the loose called ScissorMan, but the fact that he carries a giant pair of shears around with him that grate this god awful noise make it all that much worse. Since you play as a woman that is trying to escape from this lunatic and can only throw things and hide from him to get away from him, there was one part in the game where I thought I was finally home free.
All I had to do was get in the elevator and off I would go. So I sat there waiting for the elevator to arrive, looking all around to see if the little bastard was going to show up. As I heard the elevator arrive, I breathed a sigh of relief and went to hop on, only to have the Scissor Man come walking off it. I Just about hit the ceiling in my apartment and let out a Ned Flanders-ish shrill squeal of terror. -- Jeff McAllister; Sr. Editor
12. Silent Hill 3 ; Konami; PS2; 2003
I don’t care much for horror titles because the "jump out and ooga -booga" factor is over done and is used for cheap scares. Silent Hill however, for those who have played any game in the series, knows the franchise takes a different approach to screwing with your mind. In Silent Hill 3, there is one part where you are exploring a hospital – a hospital in a Silent Hill game you say? – and you enter a store room that has nothing in it but a sink and a mirrored wall. Not so scary right?
That is until the reflected version of you starts to become covered in blood while the room you are standing in starts to fill with it as it pours out of the sink. As you move around the room looking for something, anything, your doppelganger, the one covered head to toe in blood, stops mimicking your movements and just stays still, staring at you. Stay and wonder what is happening too long and you’ll die. -- Jeff McAllister; Sr. Editor
