12 out of 15
What makes this game fresh is the fact it is the first American Dragonball Z game on non-handheld, Nintendo console.

It has been five years since Goku has seen his friends. With his young son Gohan, Goku leaves his home to visit his former master and friends at the Kame House.

On the other side of the planet a longhaired stranger lands his space-pod and meets up with the Namekian, Piccolo. The stranger reveals that he is a Saiyan named Raditz and that he is the brother of Goku. Without fighting Piccolo, Raditz locates Goku's powerlevel and heads towards Kame House.

Once Raditz arrives on the island, he kidnaps Gohan and challenges Goku to save him. Raditz and Goku are killed by Piccolo in a desperate final move to save Gohan and the earth. When Goku dies he gets to train with King Kai on a small planet in Otherworld. Before Raditz's death he announces two more Saiyans will come to destroy earth within a year.

The Z Fighters, Piccolo, Krillin, Tien, Yamcha, Chiaotzu and Gohan hold off the Saiyan named Nappa. Many Z Fighters die, but Goku arrives to save Krillin and Gohan just in time. Goku destroys Nappa and defeats Vegeta, who then escapes.

To wish back their friends, Bulma, Krillin and Gohan leave to Namek to use the Namekian Dragonballs. Vegeta also arrives on Namek and Goku is called to help. On Namek the Z Fighters, including Vegeta, defeat the Ginyu Force, a high-powered attack squad. Krillin, Gohan and a Namekian named Dende make a wish on the Dragonballs to bring Piccolo back to life on Namek. Upon Piccolo's return he fuses with a Namekian named Nail. An evil tyrant named Frieza has come to Namek for the Dragonballs and is forced to fight the Z Fighters, only to be saved by a Super Saiyan Goku.

A year later Frieza and his father King Cold comes to earth, but both are destroyed by a mysterious Super Saiyan youth named Trunks. Trunks turns out to be the son of Bulma and Vegeta from 19 years in the future. Trunks tells of Goku's death as well as androids that come to earth in three years. Trunks gives Goku a cure for the heart issue that would have killed him. The Z Fighters train for 3 years.

The androids arrive and create havoc. An android from the future named Cell comes back in time to absorb the other androids to gain ultimate power. Vegeta and Gohan become Super Saiyan for the first time and with Goku and Trunks fight the androids. Eventually Cell kills Goku and then is defeated by Gohan who becomes a Super Saiyan 2.

The graphics are cell-shaded. They are clean and crisp and seem rather 3-D like. The backgrounds for the most part are recreated based on the program. The character shading and shaping is dead on, however if you have a large screen television the detail is somewhat decreased between light and dark colors.

The sounds are from the television series. The voices, for the exception of maybe one or two are done by their original FUNimation voice actors. The phrases and taunts spoken by the characters get to become annoying. "Drop dead!" Vegeta said and said and said. Every time I did something short of a special attack.

This game is a button-smasher. If not for the use of the C-stick to use basic moves, one could easily have blisters. The action is so fast that you need prior fighting game experience just to have the thumb speed to compete on the easy level. The fastest feature is called the Blast-Zone. It is much like the fighting in the program when the characters move so fast it is hard to keep up. The only way to come out victorious is rotate the control stick clockwise over and over until you get the final hit when exiting the Blast-Zone.
