PS2 Game of the Year: Persona 3
It's hard to say which aspect of RPG Persona 3 is the most addictive. It's easy to become obsessed with collecting and fusing Personas, the weird and wonderful creatures that do battle on your behalf, easily sucks away hour upon hour of your time, but attending to the day-to-day concerns of your onscreen alter ego, such as making friends and doing homework, is no less compelling. Persona 3's turn-based gameplay might be somewhat old-fashioned, but its arresting visuals, intriguing characters and just-one-more-level gameplay prove that you don't need to be next-gen to be brilliant.

Runner-Up: Odin Sphere
If you have a PS2, and like RPGs (heck, even if you don't), you should try Odin Sphere. Though ultimately you may not love it - it is certainly an acquired taste - you will no doubt appreciate its unique approach and breathtakingly lovely graphics. The RPG genre tends to rely on a handful of familiar gameplay formulas, oftentimes making it difficult to tell one title from the next, but Odin Sphere, with its fast-paced side-scrolling action and color-drenched artwork seemingly pulled straight from the pages of a storybook, is like nothing else.

Runner-Up: Rogue Galaxy
Before there was Mass Effect, Level-5's PlayStation 2 RPG, Rogue Galaxy, sent us on an amazing journey to galaxies far, far, away in search of treasure and glory. This first-party title from SCEA proved that the PS2 is still a relevant system despite its obvious backseat status to the PS3 because there are still games out there being made that are worth playing. Rogue Galaxy is best described as a modern day Phantasy Star, mixing equal parts sci-fi and fantasy to create the perfect RPG experience. While not quite as serious as Mass Effect, this light-hearted action focused RPG offers as much depth and exploration as that Xbox 360 juggernaut.
