Overall Game of the Year: Dragon Age: Origins

Our 2009 Game of the Year comes with a caveat - we are specifically showcasing the PC version of Bioware's epic. While the Xbox 360 version is a great romp through Ferelden, the PC version is where Dragon Age truly shines with its tactical combat view and enhanced graphics. There were prettier games in 2009, games with fantastic multiplayer support and co-op play, and arguably better writing - but none of them put everything together like Dragon Age. This is epic role-playing at its finest and is our 2009 Game of the Year.

Runner Up: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

When speaking about Dragon Age we mentioned games with better graphics and arguably better writing. We were really talking about Uncharted 2. You can easily make a case for this being Game of The Year as it took the action/adventure genre to new heights with dizzying set pieces and shockingly detailed visuals combined with some of the best writing and voice acting in any videogame, ever.

Runner Up: Arkham Asylum

Another game with brilliant writing, Batman: Arkham Asylum is the Batman game you have always wanted to play but for whatever reason no one designed until the folks at Rocksteady delivered this wonderful bag of awesome.

Runner Up: Red Faction: Guerrilla

The sleeper hit of 2009 - Red Faction: Guerilla took the open world game design idea and added the ability to destroy any and everything in sight. When a game tasks you with destroying a building and you have the option of shooting it with a rocket launcher, smashing it with a sledgehammer or driving into it with a massive truck...you know you are in for a good time. And Red Faction: Guerrilla is all about simply smashing stuff and having a good time doing it.

Runner Up: House of the Dead: Overkill

The Wii makes an appearance with House of the Dead: Overkill - a game that sports the best soundtrack in videogaming history. Sure it's "just a rail shooter" but House of the Dead provides non stop zombie killing entertainment ...and you can dance to it. As companies try again and again to develop "mature" games on the Wii, this is one that you really need to own. It's one of the best Wii games ever made...it's just not for little Billy. Unless you want little Billy to learn how to kill the shambling undead. In that way consider it a training exercise.
