Happy Holidays and welcome to the final edition of TWID for 2007. Most companies are taking next week off, so there was an enormous amount of downloadable content this week. As if the holidays weren’t stressful enough, there were plenty of games to play this week. We’ll start with Sony, who updated the PlayStation store so late on Thursday night, they had me playing games until the wee hours of the morning, just so I can tell you whether or not you should be buying them.
PlayStation Network
Sony put up thirteen pieces of downloadable content, and they had the gall to make me spend almost $40 on games right before the Christmas holiday. Thanks Sony, I am not sure how I will defend these purchases to my wife – other than saying I had to do it for work!
The online only game Warhawk received a patch to version 1.2 as well as a new add on which is called the Omega Dawn pack. It will set you back $7.99 but adds a nighttime map and a new combat dropship. If you’re already a fan of the game, this is definitely a must buy.
If you would rather go down memory lane, that’s okay too as Sony has put up the original Warhawk game for the PSOne. This game will play on both the PS3 and the PSP and will cost you $5.99. Having never played this game before (it’s circa 1995) I can tell you it was one of those “let’s use the CD for cheesy acting video” games, combined with less than good looking gameplay. The style of graphics remind me of Hard Drivin’ – it’s heavy on the polygons. Still it’s an interesting look at the game that spawned the fantastic multiplayer PS3 game.
Remember the Toy Home demo from a few weeks back? Well, the final version of the game has been released. If you were a fan of Toy Commander on the Dreamcast and/or Re-Volt, then you will probably have already purchased this game. It’s a lot of fun crashing into basic household items and it’s also a racing game that has DUALSHOCK support. This game is $9.99 and worth adding to your library.
A demo was released for Snakeball and although Sony says the full game is available online, I was unable to find the game for purchase at press time. Based on the demo, it’s just as well as it didn’t seem that exciting to me, even though it’s supposed to be a sports game.
Two new games were released which require the PlayStation Eye (yay, I knew there was a reason why I’d drop $40 for a @#$%ing webcam). The first one isn’t really a “game” but more like “fun with webcam art.” It’s called “Mesmorize: Distort,” it costs $1.99, and basically as you move around on screen with your webcam, different effects happen. Hey, what did you expect for two bucks? The other game is called Trials of Topoq and basically you’re moving a ball using your movements on the webcam to push the ball along. Seeing my fat self on screen was more scary than I thought it would be, and it reminded me I need to get back to playing DDR more. It is a neat mechanic, but it’s not a perfect game and can be frustrating trying to move the damn ball. Trials of Topoq will set you back $4.99.
Keeping with the holiday spirit, Sony did put up some totally free content this week: there’s two add on packs for High Stakes: Poker Edition, holiday skins for Motorstorm and Folklore as well as a free song for Guitar Hero 3. A Blacksite Area 51 demo and a GT 5 Prologue trailer round out the big offerings for the PlayStation store. It sounds like this could have been three weeks worth of content! Just try to refrain from spending $40 like I did this close to the holiday, ok?
