Spielberg’s Boom Blox is a remarkable and surprising experience.

Graphics rely heavily on cuteness over actual impressiveness. While they may not completely dazzle they are more than adequate for this type of game and the charm factor does indeed help compensate. The hefty physics engine does occasionally take its toll on performance especially during multiplayer. Get more than a few boxes and blocks zooming threw the air coupled with some explosions and the frame rates can really take a dive. This most likely is a limitation of the Wii’s rendering power and it’s an ok trade off considering the innovative motion controls that only it offers. The musical score and sound effects are all quite enjoyable and help set the atmosphere especially in the themed sections.

The wide variety of levels and play modes should provide players quite a few hours of quality entertainment and that ramps up even further when you get a few friends together. Even if you somehow manage to grow tired of all the included content Blox features a robust level editor which allows you to pull in any of the included levels and mix them up as you see fit. You can also design your very own levels from scratch using a ton of different props that are featured as rewards from achieving goals in Adventure mode.

Boom Blox is a delightful puzzle game that should appeal to a broad audience. It’s both easy to grasp yet incredibly difficult to master. If you are looking for a strong single player puzzler or a multiplayer party game—this should definitely be on your short list.
