d) Part Three
After working your way through the alleys you’ll reach a warehouse, and the only way to enter it is if you use the lift at the far end of the lot.
Using the lift is like a dinner bell for the infected, and every time I’ve used it I’ve had to pay dearly. Keep an eye out for hordes of the infected climbing up from the backs of the trailers below and leaping down from the higher rooftops above.
Make your way down into the waterworks and the city sewer system, checking your corners and all the little pathways that can hide the infected from view before it is too late.
Climb up the surface access ladder and you will be at the foot of the Mercy Hospital building. Just inside its front door is a safe room, so make your way across the lot, check the ambulance for any medkits, and head inside.
e) Part Four
Mercy Hospital is by no means a safe place, and fell to the infected long ago. It has many side rooms that you can check out for supplies as you make your way to the roof, just be sure to sweep them for any infected first.
Most of the hospital is relatively straightforward, but every time I’ve used the elevator the noise attracts many hordes of the infected. Last time the infected were banging on the walls to either side of the elevator doors; I’m sure the next time I run this route they will break right through those walls and make waiting for that elevator a real danger.
If you are with a group that works together more than panics, try bunching up in the closet found in one of the rooms nearby. If you have people standing in the back of the closet and crouching in the front you have four guns covering the only way to get to you.
The elevator only goes to the 28th floor, which means you’ll have to go up the final two floors on foot. Make your way through the construction zones and into the safe room beyond.
f) Part Five
Head up the stairs and down the long hallway, briefly checking the side room entryways as you go to make sure they don’t have any nasty surprises.
Make your way up the elevator shaft to get to the roof, but be careful. I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve seen a smoker ready to grab someone from my group in that shaft.
Once on the roof, hop down to the landing pad and make your way to the maintenance room on the far side. Grab supplies from both that room and scattered throughout other areas on the roof, and try the radio. If you are lucky you will reach a chopper pilot in the area who will let you know how far out they are from picking you up.
However, using the radio is yet another thing that the infected seem to be keen to, and in doing so you will trigger one of the biggest fights for your survival. Though the turret on the top of the room can be used to drop many of the infected don’t be surprised if a smoker lashes onto you from the highest point on the roof, a little to the left. Counter their attempt to lash you with their tongue by spraying them with lead.
The infected with come from every direction, but there are only three ways onto the roof of that room. If one person is on the turret have one person check the left, one check the right, and one waiting just inside the stairwell looking down the steps.
This will be an ideal defense while you wait for the helicopter, but keep in mind that when any tanks arrive everyone is going to have to play it by ear and kill it while not letting the group get overrun.
The noise of the helicopter will attract even more infected, making the rooftop become absolutely covered with them. As you make your way to the landing pad throw a pipe bomb a short distance away from the pad. This will buy you some time to let your group get on the chopper and lift off.
2) Death Toll
a) General information – Many people fled infected zones using the highway system, which quickly became filled with abandoned cars blocking the traffic. However, one of them does lead to a riverfront property set up with a radio, which can ferry your group downstream to safety. Of course, in between you and it is Riverside, a town filled with the infected.
b) Part One
Follow the road, and down the slope to the left of the broken overpass. To the right on the other side is a ladder to get back up.
The tunnel ahead has many nooks filled with supplies, but check your corners before you enter.
Hordes of the infected often congregate inside the tunnel, near either the semi truck or near the caved in section.
At the barricade, take a left and continue on through the service access.
Head through the big room, which has supplies scattered in side rooms, and out to the surface.
Follow the cliff on the left to reach the safe room, marked by a light on the side of the building.
c) Part Two
Head through the sewers, and through either pipe which lead to different levels of a vertical shaft up ahead.
Once in the shaft you will often find supplies, but also a horde of the infected.
In the floodgate control area up ahead you will need to lower the floodgates to cross to the other side of the sewer. The problem is the infected will be attracted en masse to the loud ringing noise the gate alarm makes, and that’s if you don’t find a witch in there as well.
Progress through the sewers to reach the surface access building, fighting off any more hordes that come barreling at you.
Head around the building, across the field, and through the windows to reach the caboose safe room.
d) Part Three
Head across the train yard towards the depot. The tower on the left has supplies, but walking up its metal stairway often attracts a horde of the infected.
Cross the depot’s walkway, hop the fence, and take a right to star heading down the road to Riverside. Keep your ears perked for the sounds of tanks roaming the area, as many have frequented the depot in the past.
You’ll pass a cottage that has been friendly to survivors in the past. If they are still around make use of their hospitality and stock up on ammo and supplies.
Make your way through the cemetery and into the church. A local survivor who has been sniping the infected from various locations in the area to help thin out their numbers usually guards the door.
Do not under any circumstances allow someone to ring the church bell. In one of my groups one idiot decided to ring it for fun, and the next thing I know we are fighting hordes of the infected that were attracted to the noise from miles around.
e) Part Four
Head up the church tower and exit by dropping down to the entrance roof. Use the opportunity to pick off as many infected as you can before you drop down to make things easier.
You’re in Riverside now, a nice little chunk of suburbia filled with what used to be its citizens. Be prepared for frequent attacks from hordes.
Check out the Quik Buy for supplies if you need to, but otherwise just hop the sandbags near the buses and follow the road around to the left.
Head down the street and into the back entrance of Poppy Field florist’s shop. Be prepared to find many infected in the area.
Once you reach the parking lot head back onto the street and around to the left again. Watch out for any tanks in the next parking lot.
Use the van to hop up and enter the second floor entrance of the office building.
Head through the building and drop down out front, then use the forklift to clear the way once more. Keep in mind the infected don’t exactly like the sound of a diesel engine mixed with crumbling concrete and a horde will likely come running.
Make your way down the street and through the alleys ahead to reach the next safe room. Be aware that witches love this particular area of Riverside, as if they know sooner or later a survivor will be heading towards that big red door.
f) Part Five
Head through the suburbs, fighting off any hordes that happen upon you, and through the fortified house in the middle. Hopefully it will still be staffed by a group of survivors covering the street.
Exit out the back door and make your way across the field towards Riverside Park.
Follow the path to reach the riverfront, but watch the tree line for any infected lying in wait.
The house on the riverfront has a radio and many supplies, which you will definitely need. Using the radio attracts a massive amount of the infected, which you will need to fight off while you wait for a boat to make it to the dock.
A mounted turret on the balcony can really help keep the infected at bay, but leaves you vulnerable to infected climbing up from the left and right as it can’t pivot that far to either side.
For the most part, stay on the upper level. There are only a handful of ways to climb up there, and you can both cover them and the person on the turret with only three other people.
When the boat arrives, make a break for the dock immediately! The sounds of the boat’s engine will attract even more hordes of the infected. Try to throw a pipe bomb out into the forest as you head down the dock to buy you some time as the boat makes its approach.
3) Dead Air
a) General information – For a while the airport was a great way to leave the infected zone; it was heavily guarded and regulated well. Now it’s teeming with the infected. If you are crazy or desperate enough to head that way, bring lots of ammo and pray you’ll find a working plane and willing pilot among the wreckage.
