Thomas described her as “a very different thinker, based on John Stuart Mill and Karl Marx, and she is unwilling to allow any individual to compromise her plans”. Instead of a right-wing crazy, we now have a left-wing crazy running the ideological show.
As for the overall narrative design, Thomas offered this: “the focus here is on choice, in that the player is granted free will this time around, in contrast to the first time around. Unlike other big daddies, Delta is not a slave to his fate, and is able to make a number of ethical decision that shape the outcome of the plot in a way that wasn’t possible in the original.”
Much was made of the fact that the moral choices in the game will be much more complex, and that the “Jesus or Hitler” dichotomy is long gone. Also – it was strongly hinted at that there wouldn’t be a traditional “final boss” at the end – something folks saw as a major weakness in the first game. We were assured that the developers have taken “a very different approach” to the ending.
One of the biggest and most important questions raised was what was kept – and what was done away with – from the original. McClendon took this one. “The big stuff that we wanted to keep – the emphasis on choice and getting to kind of ‘roll your own shooter’ and play the game that you wanted to play and the diversity of that toolset, as well as some of the things Jordan touched on – the deep story with philosophical underpinnings, and actual moral choice.”
