Hexago today announced that Quake III Arena has been ported to IPv6, the next generation Internet protocol and the basis of the new Internet. Hexago's Quake III porting project is a practical example of application porting demonstrating how existing applications can use IPv6. In addition, the project is the first of its kind to demonstrate the advantages of IPv6 for the gaming industry. An important step in the deployment of IPv6 networks is to make sure existing applications can use the new protocol. Today's applications must be adapted in order to support IPv6 properly, which may require a significant amount of time depending on the complexity and size of the applications. The Hexago Quake III porting project benefits developers who have an application to port that is written in C and who seek to determine the steps involved and estimate the amount of work required to port the application to IPv6.
