Rayman Origins Tech For Free?
Rayman creators wants to share UbiArt technology with the world.

The technology that is being used to create Rayman Origins may soon be available to other developers. The UbiArt technology allows for a detailed, hand-drawn animation presentation - much of what has been shown off in creator Michel Ancel's latest endeavor. Speaking to Develop, Ancel said that the technology "has been built to be shared," and that he doesn't like the practice of game companies locking away their proprietary technology.

"If the guys who invented the paintbrush only kept it for themselves then fine art... would be ephemeral," he said. "So yes, I want [UbiArt] to be open source, I want it to go out and be shared and evolved."

Ancel added that he was inspired by Disney, which routinely shares its artistic process with other animators.

"We need to be more open," Ancel continued. "I don’t believe that keeping the technology to yourself is interesting. I want someone to look at our game and be inspired to use the tools to be artistic themselves. It is more interesting to have a community and share our content."

While Ancel wants to share the technology, first he has to convince his overlords at Ubisoft. While it's possible, for right now we just don't know how generous Ubisoft will be with this technology.
