The graphics remain a bright spot. For a text sim they’re downright lovely. The courses are colorful and easy on the eyes. There are eight courses in all but the community is pumping out new ones with the built-in editing tools. The only knock is that the Hole Descriptions are still empty. Why even have the button there if the designer doesn’t use it?

Total Pro Golf 2 is for golfing die-hards. Like the real sport, the game takes patience. You are not guaranteed to be the next Tiger Woods in this game; it doesn’t make it easy on you. It’s possible to play the game for weeks, only to discover that your alter-ego is in fact PGA pro Frank Lickliter (a fellow I had the pleasure of losing to every single year in high school; I like to think Frank honed his skills beating me senseless) but this is also what makes the game so much fun. In the end, TPG2 is a required upgrade for fans of the original, and hopefully it can attract its share of new players, as well. The game, and its developer, deserves it.

Owing to the lack of an overarching storyline, Mount & Blade is a game that’s difficult to get into at first. If you can get past the growing pains, however, it offers a compelling, dynamic world that you are free to explore at your leisure and a combat model that is both frenetic and addicting.
