Hellgate isn’t all bad by any means; this is not a steaming pile of junk, it’s just that it’s so disappointing that it isn’t tighter, cleaner and simply better than what the final product turned out to be. Multiplayer is by far the best way to play, joining up with people and unleashing fury on the demons because you get to see more of the character types fighting at once. The team metagame is interesting and enjoyable. Why you’d want to buy the super duper subscription is really anyone’s guess, though. This game doesn’t meter a monthly fee – no way no how. Still, playing online is fun, and is what keeps the game right at the “average” grade.
The game continues to get support from Flagship, and based on how it performed at launch, it needed it. The team seems devoted to fixing problems and adding content, which is great, but this was in no way ready for its late October launch and playing the game today, while it’s clearly improved, it’s still not a prime time game deserving of the talents of the people that created it. It’s still pretty average. There are core issues here that a series of patches might not even be able to fix. For a game with such promise it’s a shame that it’s sunk into the realm of also-ran.
