Penny Arcade On the Rain Slick Precipice of Darkness Review
11 out of 15
Hilarity ensues.
Date: Friday, June 06, 2008
Author: Brandon “Fruit F*&^er” Cackowski-Schnell

The game only has four environments, but they’re well modeled and all are quite distinctive. Each area has its own brand of enemies with their own attacks, many of which are quite humorous. Gabe, Tycho and your character are all modeled well and the attack animations are well done. Even more impressive is the 2-D representation of your created character that appears in all of the cut scenes. The cut scenes are all animated in the distinctive style of Penny Arcade and to see your created character in there, as if he or she had been drawn from scratch, rather than created from a mish mash of parts is quite a treat.

Despite Holkins’ many talents as a writer, oddly enough, the weakest parts of the game are the conversations. The various item and enemy descriptions are all hilarious, as are the spoken parts of the ancillary characters and the story itself, however the conversations between the characters in your party falls flat at times. Additionally, nothing is spoken except for the excellent narration which ends all too early. None of the characters speak, so other than the ambient sounds of the environment and random sounds of battle, there’s not a lot to tempt the ear.

At five to six hours from start to finish, the game is somewhat short; however when you consider that the game is only 20 bucks, the math works out. While the game can be enjoyed by those who have never seen a panel of Penny Arcade, the full experience will only be had by those who religiously check for updates every M-W-F. That being said, even if you’re not familiar with the comic, as long as you don’t mind a little vulgarity, and one or two urine soaked weapons, the game offers a fun, light-hearted romp filled with breezy combat controls, dozens of filthy hobos to beat up on and one positively useless cat.
