Each environment found throughout the game is huge and although the visage of corridors can get tedious at times, it doesn’t hurt that the game is built using the idTech 4 Engine – or the DOOM 3 engine as it was once known – which keeps the atmosphere intense and beautiful at the same time. There is always something to keep the action going, no matter where you are, whether it is an old castle or a farm and that something is more often than not, the gaggle of enemies that seem to pop up from any and everywhere.
The enemies that you’ll come across run the gamut of your common bullet fodder to enemies that make you swear up and down when they appear. Robotic sounding Flamethrower soldiers deal mass amounts of damage while absorbing the same, Scribes cast spells to protect the rest of their allies and the Assassins “bamf” in and out of sight like a maniacal Nightcrawler from the X-Men. The sassy Elite soldiers make their return once again with a new trick up their tight, leather sleeves. This time around they can raise fallen soldiers into the “Despoiled”, skeleton-like Nazi soldiers that can toss green balls of death, making life very difficult for you.
To help you overcome the mass of enemies you will come across, the game equips you with various different weapons, such as a Tesla Cannon, the Panzerschrek, and the Particle Cannon, but other than the MP40 and MP43 machine guns and the always handy sniper rifle, they aren’t all that useful, except for particular boss fights and certain instances that are far and few between.
The single player campaign will pull you in for a good 10-14 hours, depending on if you were nice enough to do the side missions, and overall it’s a good time with a decent story. It’s not the Great Gatsby of game storytelling but it is enough to satisfy fans looking for another chapter in the Wolfenstein legacy. You kill Nazis with super powers. That’s it.
Wolfenstein’s multiplayer – when games were eventually found – was unbelievably laggy and the visuals looked like they were dragged through the mud. I was shocked at how hard it was to find a game to join. Maybe the lag is the reason? Hard to say, but for now stick to single player.
In the end this is a by the numbers shooter with slick graphics, and ample opportunity to shoot supercharged Nazis. It's not going to win any awards but it's worth checking out if you’re looking for a weekend to pass the time shooting everyone's favorite bad guys.
