I. Basic Tips
Killzone 2 is a standard shooter when it comes to the basics. There's little here that is unusual or hard to learn, but that doesn't take away from some tough combat. The Helghast are a formidable force and you need to stick to some basic tips to see you through the campaign.
Cover--It's important not to get overwhelmed by enemies by rushing into battles. Instead, use the corner of walls and objects in your surrounding environment for cover. Pressing L2 allows you to snap to cover, then lean up or out by moving the left analog stick. Some guns, like the LMG, have improved accuracy when used from cover. Test out different weapons to see what works for you.
Reloading--Always reload whenever there's a lull in the action. Even if you're down only one bullet, reload anyway--that one bullet could make the difference between finishing a mission or dying.
Melee--In tight spaces, melee is often the way to go. Firing your gun often will take more time and energy than just running up to an enemy and bashing them with a click of the right analog stick. Remember that you also have your combat knife for one-hit kills.
Helghast versus ISA weaponry--Almost always, the guns dropped by Helghast are better than those ISA defaults. Swap whatever you have for a Helghast firearm when possible.
Helghast Intel and Symbols--Hidden throughout the 10 levels are silver briefcases housing Helghast intelligence files, as well as bronze symbols of the Helghast. Collect these to unlock trophies and access bonuses on the official Killzone website. There are 20 pieces of intel and 32 symbols in the game.
Level of Difficulty--Three options are available from the start, the final unlocking when you've completed the game once.
II. Corinth River
"Alpha Team is assigned to spearhead the advance of the Nemesis convoy through the outer defenses of Visari's capital."
[INTEL: 2]; [SYMBOLS: 3]
The New Sun: "Can Alpha Team survive their drop into hostile territory?"
Welcome to Helghan, soldier! You start not in a combat zone, but orbiting the outer atmosphere of the planet in a massive ISA vessel. Follow Garza to get your mission briefing, taking time if you want to listen in on conversations among the crew. Go to the way point to forward the mission.
Corinth Sands:
"Unexpected resistance has forced Alpha Team and the Nemesis convoy to drop short of the planned landing zone."
As soon as you crash land on the beach, keep up with Garza and the rest of the crew as they dash away from the wreckage. A trio of Helghast will ambush the group ahead from higher ground, although your buddies can take care of them easily enough. Don't worry about taking out the Helghast bearing down on the beach until you meet up with Echo squad; killing them from afar only results in them spawning.
Once you rendezvous with the squad, you find yourself surrounded by Helghast. Your first priority needs to be taking out the machine gunners camped out on the bridge. Grab the rocket launcher located to your right; it's next to the ammunition pick up and fallen Vektan soldier. Quickly--and I do mean quickly because the machine gun fire will tear you to shreds--turn your sights to the bridge and fire a rocket on the bridge, aiming for the explosive crates nestled among the machine guns. Now that London Bridge has fallen down, you can turn your attention to cleaning out the remaining forces. A couple of soldiers are shooting down onto your position that you need to eliminate before stepping away from cover. Pick them off using zoomed-in shots and then continue up the beach to reach the floodgate entrance. More Helghast on the way: a couple of transports drop off soldiers eager to get your number.
Resist the temptation to shoot at them from the left side of the area behind the barbed wire. Instead, crouch and use cover to meet up with your guys. That should put you about halfway across the beach. From here, sprint (click L3) to the far right side of the beach. You're shielded against fire over there, which makes it a good spot for starting your offensive push. Pick off Helghast one-by-one, starting with those closest to you. Let your buddies serve as a distraction rather than standing out in the open and giving the Helghast a target that they're sure to taken down. When you've cleared the area in front of the floodgate, work with Garza to climb up to the elevator.
Stahl Arms Warehouse: "The convoy is stalled with Sev and garza trying to fight their way through Helghast resistance in order to secure the floodgate controls and keep the convoy moving."
Take a stroll down the hallway, picking up ammo or swapping rifles if desired before heading up the stairs. The warehouse ahead is crawling with Helghast infantry, so definitely make sure your clip is fresh. Your first victims are the pair of soldiers gabbing in the center of the room. Lob a grenade after a second or two of cooking it toward them. Once they're gone, their friends come out to play. Don't follow Garza down to the warehouse floor. Keep to the balcony so as to have a better vantage. Grab cover and pop up to dispatch the Helghast on the other balcony. You want to do this up here rather than from the warehouse floor where your viewing angle will make it harder to get a good shot. After you've killed the Helghast on the opposite balcony, meet up with Garza on the floor to clear out the warehouse of remaining Helghast. If you spent a lot of time fighting on the balcony, he's probably wounded so make an effort to revive him before engaging remaining forces.
With the warehouse floor clear, follow Garza. Upon reaching the locked door, he'll ask you to cover him while he hacks the console. Grab the railing for cover as Helghast stream in on the warehouse floor. Cook a grenade, throwing it so you nail at least two Helghast (three, if well-thrown). Pick off any remainders and Garza will suddenly open the door. What a coincidence. Head through to access the floodgate controls in a room ahead. Beware of the snipers nesting in the control room across the way. Zoom in and take them out, then open the floodgate. [SYMBOL #1: Shoot the symbol on the concrete wall above and to the right of the two snipers in the room across from you.] As soon as you leave the floodgate control room, a couple of Helghast are on you. Either run up to them and execute them with melee blows or stick close to the control room. You can use the area near the control room for cover and take them out more methodically. Head through the newly opened door to reach the eastern Verdran Overlook with Garza when you're finished.
Verdran Overlook East: "Now that the convoy is making progress, Sev must scramble to keep up. however, the high ledges make it easy for the Helghast to lay an ambush."
[INTEL #1: Right after entering the area and receiving the hint regarding intel documents, you can grab this first piece of intel on the ground. You can't miss it: a shiny briefcase.] Continue through the alleyways to reach the overlook, which over looks the convoy. You need to eliminate all the Helghast on the overlook to allow the convoy to roll through. Turn left, chuck a grenade, then mop up any remaining Helghast. Use cover, as there are at least half a dozen guys here and it's easy to get overwhelmed or think you got them all even though they're hiding behind a fruit stand or crate. When all enemies have been killed, follow Garza into a stairwell. [SYMBOL #2: Drop down into the stairwell and you receive a hint regarding symbols. Look at the wall across from the broken set of stairs to find the second symbol.]
:Storm Drain 11-34C:
"The convoy is safe for now, but Sev and Garza have to find a way to get to the other side of the canal or risk getting left behind."
Three Helghast are waiting for you in the storm drain, hiding behind pillars. Stick to either side of the storm drain, using the pillars for cover yourself. The Helghast can't resist popping out and firing, which is when you should pop them with your gun. [SYMBOL #3: Look to your right as you exit the storm drain to shoot the symbol on the other side of the chain link fencing.] Follow Garza up the stairs to arrive at the western overlook.
Verdran Overlook West:
"The way ahead is narrow and the convoy bogs down under fire. Sev and Garza must neutralize the ambush and clear out their strongholds."
A few Helghast are engaged on the overlook with ISA forces. There's no need for you to rush out and shoot them as they'll get eliminated without the need for intervention. After they're gone, listen in on Garza's conversation then mount the machine gun in the room down the overlook. Your task is simple: kill the enemies that appear on the three floors of the build directly across from the gun. Helghast begin streaming forth on the first floor, but when it catches on fire they start showing up on the second, then third floors. When the building collapses, you're safe to dismount the machine gun.
Follow Garza to check on the Intruder crash site. As you make your way to the Intruder, you run into an ISA soldier that is brutally executed by a Helghast which you can then exact justice upon yourself. A few more need justice surrounding the crash, including a rifleman above the site. Use the rocket launcher to blast through the warehouse door marked with the colorful Helghast logo and head inside. No enemies inside, so just make it through to the other side. [INTEL #2: Before exiting the warehouse, check out the space underneath the stairs to find the second intel case.] Open the door after climbing the stairs to confront a surprised Helghast soldier that you can quickly kill with your knife or melee attack.
Korovis Dam: "Alpha Team is reunited by must aid the Nemesis convoy in driving off the Helghast counterattack. Secure the dam and then extract as quickly as possible."
The three Helghast featured in the cutscene are best dealt with using a cooked grenade, so chuck one toward them as soon as you have control. If you don't manage to get all three, kill the one or two that remain before heading across the bridge to the defensive tower. Of course, you can't step foot on that bridge until you zero in on the machine gunner on the other side. Using a rifle on him requires good aiming, but if you grab a rocket launcher blasting him is easy.
In the dam's defensive tower are a handful of Helghast that you should have no trouble dealing with. This is a good opportunity to rack up close combat kills, although if you're impatient you can just as easily shoot 'em up. With the tower cleared, another awaits further up. Cross the catwalk and run into the lower floor of the tower. Kill the rocket trooper and general soldier inside, then aim up into the top floor to eliminate the soldiers there. Use the ladder to climb down to the ground when it's clear.
Run over to the convoy and pick up the rocket launcher near your buddies. Your objective is to wipe out the Helghast tank that appears. A couple rockets is all it takes to destroy it. Next, you're asked to take control of the tank. Hop in and start battling the Helghast infantry and tanks that appear. You should eliminate the rocket troopers in the towers first. They are more of a nuisance than anything else and can destroy your tank if you leave them unchecked. The tank is less of a concern, although eliminate it when you feel comfortable that the rocket troopers can't kill you. The infantry shouldn't be a problem. When you've eliminated enough Helghast, regroup with the convoy to complete the mission.
III. Blood Meridian
"Progress by the ISA convoy is halted by the Helghast occupation of Visari Square. Air support is denied by the presence of an Arc tower."
[INTEL: 3]; [SYMBOLS: 5]
Landing Zone 33: "Alpha Team lands near Visari Square and needs to report to Captain Narville for further instructions."
After a rough landing, your first objective is to meet up with Captain Narville near the barricade. He's just a few steps ahead. [SYMBOL #4: To the left od Captain Narville's position is a hidden alcove at one of the buildings. Turn into it to find the symbol.] He informs you of the plan to destroy the Arc tower. Following the conversation, go to the locked door marked with a way point. Set the charge and head through. [INTEL #3: When you turn right after going through the blasted door, a piece of intel is sitting on the ground behind wooden palettes.] Continue down the alleyway by hopping over the barricade.
Dakurol Alley: "Alpha Team splits up with Sev and Garza taking a detour through the city's many alleys."
There are grenades in a lighted room to your right once you turn the corner. Ahead are a few Helghast that are pointed out by your buddy. Cook a grenade and toss it toward them before opening fire. When you've killed them, don't rush out from the alley. Two Helghast appear on a walkway above, one of which stays on there. Kill him and a group of Helghast, including a new type, appear on the ground level which you're located. Retreat quickly behind the wall connected to the alleyway from which you entered. Using the wall for cover, kill the Helghast one-by-one. [SYMBOL #5: After clearing the area of Helghast forces, go to the dead end of the alley to your left. On the wall behind the gate is the symbol.]
Move up the alley to encounter a couple of Helghast situated in shuttered room. You can shoot through the wooden shutters; do so to eliminate them before heading in. Alternately, lob a grenade through the door to blast them. If you don't get them both, one will run upstairs and shoot at you from the balcony. You can either take him down from outside or go inside and get him from behind (preferred). When you get upstairs, you have the option of eliminating the few Helghast in the gully to your right although it isn't necessary. Continue through the building, firing back at the Helghast located across the walkway before loading up on ammo from the weapons rack. Just how you were able to shoot through the shutters, these guys can too. Chuck a grenade across the walkway to eliminate one or two, as well as cause them to scatter and give you a good shot. Clear the room, walk across and then down the stairwell to reach the canal.
Heavy Canal: "Sev and Garza must now fight their way past a heavy weapons trooper in a nearby drainage canal."
Load up on ammo or switch guns if needed because you want to be fully stocked up. Introducing the heavy trooper: he's hulking and packing a lot of heat. Defeating him means nicking his head to make him twirl around, exposing the fuel tanks on his lower back. This is his weak point. The easiest way of killing this tough customer is to stay right at the entrance to the canals, using the edge of the wall for cover. Ignore the other Helghast in the area for the time being. Pop shots at the heavy's head to make him turn around. When he does, unload on the tanks. You should zoom in when you do, of course. Repeat this and the tanks will start releasing pressure, letting you know he's close to exploding. Watch the fireworks then clean up the remaining Helghast before heading down the canal.
Wollan's View: "The ISA and Helghast forces come face to face in this built up area."
Open the gate using the floodgate valve. Above you are ISA forces battling Helghast. Climb the stairs at the end of the passageway to the right, quickly moving to cover. There are a lot of enemies here, so you need to utilize cover in order to survive. Your goal is to press the Helghast by efficiently killing them and moving up. They respawn if you stick to one spot, so as you eliminate enemies try to find space to move toward their side of the battle. The easiest way of clearing them out is to head upstairs and use the mounted gun. [SYMBOL #6: On a wall near the staircase to the left of the gun is a symbol.] Eliminate enough Helghast so that you can leave the gun and venture to the other side. Use the walkway on the left, taking cover behind the pillar there. You should have only a couple Helghast to deal with, one that can be killed with a melee blow as he rushes you. Chuck a grenade or fire a few bullets to deal with the other one. Now, you can head upstairs on that side as instructed. Kill the two Helghast upstairs and run across the catwalk to the other building.
