The Call of Duty 4 Variety Map Pack has been out for a week or so now, and I had the chance to give the maps a run through in some pretty intense battles and thought I would share my thoughts about them. Not to get into too much detail about the maps since everybody’s play style is different; it’s a brief overview of how each map plays and what methods/perks/ weapons you may find work best on them.

Creek

Probably the most gorgeous of the newly released maps, the waterfall and lush greenery are unlike most Call of Duty maps, as are all the snags and footholds you’ll repeatedly get caught up on. This map is deadly and usually a haven for every sniper, their brother, mother and distant cousin. The map centers around a crevice that holds a tunnel in the center at the bottom, with ledges and pathways along the edges that lead up to foliage that is perfect for those sniping buggers.

On the other side of the gap, there is a small gathering of dilapidated houses that serve as cover for those not wanting to trek out into the open wilderness and having their head pop like a watermelon. The tunnel at the bottom of the crevice usually ends up being a choke point between teams, especially when the headquarters is located there and it can make for some frustrating and hairy situations.

Long range weapons are your friend on this map as are flashes and stun grenades for clearing out the tunnel. As gorgeous as the map is, players have turned it into a sniper’s paradise and gameplay on it, if you aren’t proficient with the weapon, can be downright maddening.

Kill House

The smallest of the new maps and probably the least used, Kill House is a larger version of the building mock up in the training warehouse that you first enter at the beginning of the single player game.

The map, best played in a 1 vs. 1, is littered with wooden and concrete walls and barriers with places to take cover such as cars and small rooms. The map can only be played in Cage Match and Team Tactical so those looking for the hectic and frenzied pace of a large number of players in an objective based mode such as headquarters, on smaller maps like Showdown and Shipment are out of luck.
