E3 2008: Dead Space Preview
In space, no one can hear you drop bricks in your pants.

One thing that’s interesting about Dead Space is the lack of a traditional HUD. To maintain the level of immersion, the devs have instead built in those pesky bars onto Isaac’s suit. His health meter is on his back, while his stasis meter appears on his shoulder. Isaac can use stasis to slow enemies or objects down, giving him time to react. Overall it looks much better not having a bunch of bars and meters cluttering the screen. As for keeping track of his ammo, there is a counter displayed right on top of his line gun.

Dead Space looks like an amazing game. It’s gritty, dark, and disgusting – much like Prey. I like that it’s not just a blind shooter; you have to think harder when dispatching your enemies. While the PS3 version I viewed already looked terrific in terms of graphics, I bet it’ll look even better on the PC. When I asked about system requirements, I was told that they’re still figuring it out, though I can imagine that you would need a seriously good graphics card for the PC version.
