E3 2008: Borderlands Preview
That's a lot of guns...

  • Take a scoop of Mad Max, one scoop of Firefly, and a hearty helping of Diablo and you end up with Borderlands, the upcoming FPS by Gearbox Software. The game is set in Pandora, a desolate wasteland of a planet on the fringes of the galaxy. After a failed attempt at colonization forced most to leave Pandora, the remaining inhabitants are left to fend for themselves, using any means necessary to survive.

    Gearbox has dubbed the game as an “RPS” in that it’s a shooter with RPG elements. You can play single player or local multiplayer co-op with up to four players. Like an RPG, you pick a class (the demo showed a soldier and hunter) and you level up, improving your character’s skills. For example, in the demo when the soldier leveled up, he received an increase in “Assault Rifle Proficiency.” Also similar to RPGs, weapons are color coded. Green guns are more powerful, while purple guns are more “special.”

    Don’t even think that you can collect all the weapons in the game. One feature constantly bragged about by the devs is the mind-numbing amount of available weapons. To date, there are 653,000 different kinds of guns – and counting. Yes, that is a lot of guns. The guns are procedurally generated, randomizing elements such as size, type of bullets used, or whether or not it comes with a scope.

    With so many guns available to you, there are naturally many cool ways to kill your enemies. As the demo progressed, we watched as body parts littered the landscape. I particularly liked one weapon that sprayed green acid, melting people’s faces off—always a fun party trick. Some grenades do area-of-effect damage, which is always nice.

    While the idea of having over half a million guns sounds cool, I can’t help but think that this is overkill. On one hand, it assures that you’ll never have the same weapons as your friends, not to mention that it can be cool to stumble upon particularly unique killing toys. On the other hand, just how different can these weapons really be from each other? Surely a few will be generated that are nearly identical but with one slight difference.

    If NHL 2k9 were the only hockey game on the market it’d be an easy buy for any fan of the hottest game on ice. But even with exemplary competition on the shelf, this game still more than holds its own.
    It's not perfect but Force Unleashed is one of the best Star Wars games to come around in a long while.
    This freshman effort shows promise but has a lot of kinks to work out.
