Music games are hot right now with everyone under the sun living out their Rock Star dreams. With games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero World Tour delivering the whole package you need to step up your game if you plan on releasing a game that is singing only. This can be accomplished by licensing something you know will sell. With the exception of SingStar and possibly Microsoft’s upcoming Lips, most singing games fail to deliver. Fortunately, and to my pleasant surprise, Disney’s Sing It knocks it out of the park.
Singing, like laughing, is good medicine for the soul and it’s nice to see the popularity and quality of Karaoke titles on the rise. Sing It is a quality title in the genre that is not going to be for everyone. For those without kids, movies like High School Musical, Camp Rock or any of the Cheetah Girls films probably don’t make much sense to you. If you do have children in the 5 - 13 range, however, chances are they may be Disney Channel regulars, and know these movies and the songs.
The game comes with 35 songs and videos to accompany each one, the track quality is terrific and the videos are top notch. What is also very nice is everyone one of them is available right from the jump; no unlocking tunes needed. Thank you, Disney.
Popular Disney artists like Aly & Aj and Miley Cyrus compliment a host of songs from Camp Rock, HSM 1 & 2 and of course the Cheetah Girls. It’s a nice range of some really great and popular songs that nails the target demographic but the number is incredibly low considering the wealth of material Disney has to offer. As I write this there are currently no DLC songs available but apparently they are on the way. Here is hoping that instead of rehashing more HSM songs they offer up something different, some Enchanted songs perhaps.
The microphone included with the game is horrible. I’ve seen cheap microphones before but this one takes the award. Fortunately any USB mic will work and if you have SingStar the dual microphones that come with that game perform great here. The interface is clean as you’re taken to a menu where you do single player, multi player or lessons.
