Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgment Review
10 out of 15
Strategically sound gameplay, but not much else

The game does have some nagging problems that tarnish it, such as its very linear nature and other oddities. The linearity and lack of any gameplay other than the combat makes the battles feel oddly strung apart rather than a heroic campaign, and none of your party members really see much in the way of character development along the way. Save points are usually only found before each long cutscene and not after, meaning that if you fail a mission you must endure at times three load screens and two cutscenes that cannot be skipped outright before you get back to the task at hand. Once in combat again though the interface is mostly informative it often has either a lack of information such as if your Cure spell actually healed a status detriment or not, or misleading information such as how your attack damage estimates are rarely correct.

The game is certainly fun, but is also seems hamstrung as a turn-based strategy game due to its overly linear nature and lack of any true sense of story cohesion or character progression. With such elements missing from the game it more often feels like a retail game cut down to fit rather than a beefed up downloadable game. Still, the combat is solid both in its strategy options as well as in its overall flow, making the game an enjoyable experience despite its shortcomings when compared against some of the mainstays of the genre.
