  • Game: Wii Sports Resort
  • Platform: Wii
  • Publisher: Nintendo
  • Developer: Nintendo
  • Genre: Wii Sports II
  • Release Date: Spring 2009
  • Why You Should Care: Comes with Wii MotionPlus; Sword Play is awesome
  • Why You Should Worry: Won’t work without the Wii MotionPlus; Not all games are multiplayer

  • In Wii Sports Resort the “sports” are vacation-related, such as tossing a Frisbee to your dog at the beach or using a jet ski. The most appealing aspect of this game however, is the accompanied Wii MotionPlus, a device that will finally enable 1:1 interactivity with the Wiimote. A rubber jacket will also be included to accommodate this attachment.

Although Nintendo hasn’t released how many games will eventually be on Wii Sports Resort, there were playable demos for three of them: Disc Dog, Power Cruising, and the easy crowd favorite, Sword Play.

In Power Cruising, you ride a Jet Ski and race against a timer to enter various gates. Hold the Wiimote and nunchuk in front of your body as if they were handle bars. Accelerate with the B trigger. When you see a meter fill up, you can get a speed boost by quickly tweaking the Wiimote with your wrist, as if you were revving the engine.

Disc Dog is a disc-throwing game. An arrow points to the general area where you’re supposed to toss it. No buttons are used; just swing the Wiimote in a tossing motion. If you do it right, your little dog will catch the disc and a dartboard appears where the disc landed. Naturally, the closer the disc lands to the bullseye, the higher your score. It’s a shame that it’s single player though.

Finally, there’s Sword Play, in which you duel with an AI Mii or a friend using kendo sticks. The objective is to knock your opponent off the platform before the allotted time. There are no buttons to press except when you want to block. For the most part, simply hold the Wiimote like a hilt and use large, sweeping motions when you attack.
