  • Why You Should Worry: Less than eye-popping graphics on the Wii version

  • Amateur civil engineers and wannabe mayors itching to create or run their dream metropolis will be happy to know that the last version of their favorite city simulation builder is coming out soon. At EA’s Studio Showcase, I got to witness a bit of Wii-based city construction and of course, destruction in the little world of SimCity Creator.

Like past games, the basic objective is to build a city from the ground up and then deal with the day-to-day issues of running it. Naturally, you’ll need to appease the masses. Is crime increasing in one neighborhood? Plant a police station there. Issues with poor health care in the downtown district? Plop down a hospital smack in the middle of the city. Don’t worry with keeping track of all these issues, since your MySim-based assistants will be there to well...assist you.

City building is nice and easy with the Wiimote. Just simply point and drag out the size you want of a particular zone. Best of all, you can now curve your roads with the Wiimote, a nice little feature that’ll surely please long-time SimCity players. The EA rep demonstrated the ease in creating curved roads by drawing a smiley face with just a few flicks of the wrist.

Another cool new feature is the “hero building”, which affects the architecture of a city. For example, if you put a shiny, sci-fi hero building, the surrounding area will look like a scene out of Blade Runner. A Japanese hero building will transform nearby buildings into a mini-Kyoto. You can also get a little wacky, like using a crystal hero building to create your own Fortress of Solitude.

The game offers different modes of play. In Mission mode, you’re given a specific challenge, such as recovering from a disaster, or building a city without bulldozing any pre-existing roads. Meanwhile, more competitive players can enter online contests. You can vie for the title of “City with the Longest Life Expectancy” or “Most Earthquake-Prone City”.
