Let’s cut right to it: Most games tied to a movie release are quick knock offs which are rarely worth your time and money. X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the slash-tastic action game touting our loveable cigar-smoking superhero, has been in development for two long years with the goal of cementing itself as an exception to the rule.
As the title implies, you're given sole control of Wolverine as he slices his way through an enhanced adaption of the film's story. New characters and plot points embellish upon the movie, which explores the genesis of Wolverine's powers. Really though, this is an action game through and through; while narrative provides the thread that holds the whole thing together, the action is the real reason to play and there's more than enough of it here.
The combat centers on Wolverine's ability to kick ass with his legendary adamantium claws. In the game's first chapter set within Weapon X, Wolverine leaps between armed enemies and slices them up with well-timed button presses. Although he's unable to attack enemies from distance, he can rush in by pressing down on the right bumper and tapping B to attack. This allows you to string together attacks, closing the distance between enemies situated apart from each other in short time.
Enemies release orbs upon death, some granting experience and others contributing to Wolverine's rage meter. Experience orbs naturally allow you to improve Wolverine's ability by unlocking new attacks and combinations. Squeezing the right trigger when filled, the rage meter incites a heightened level of power and aggression for a temporary period that allows you to obliterate enemies. Timing its use is important, as taking down some of the bosses appears much easier with a full rage gauge than without. Even better, it can enable you to quickly eliminate a large group of guards with a brutal flurry of muscle and claws.
