With handy NPC officers, one may wonder where the multiplayer aspect comes in. Never fear; this is still an MMO. Grouping with others in space means that you’ll see multiple ships. Raids sound like they’re going to be particularly epic, as you’ll need an armada. “If five Borg cubes invade Sector 1, you’re not going there with four or five ships. You’re gonna take your whole fleet, your guild into there, of 35-40 ships to take care of that,” Said Zinkievich. I wonder how the average desktop PC will handle 40 starships on screen at one time, let alone my poor little laptop. As for your Away Team, each of the officers can be replaced by human players who wish to team up.

Star Trek Online is currently in closed beta. There’s no word on when open beta will begin, though most likely closer to launch date, which also hasn’t been announced. It’s definitely a promising game. However, creating an MMO based on an existing IP is tricky. On one hand you want to appeal to as many people as possible to gain a large subscriber base. But the other hand you don’t want to upset die-hard fans of the mythology by making too many changes. We’ll find out next year how this one shakes out.
