The attacks in the game come from various Super Mario Bros titles. You have your classic stomping on heads but you can also throw objects – and each other – at enemies as well, a la SMB 2. If you are on the Yoshi stage, you can ride one of the little dinosaurs and have him spit eggs to take down baddies. In fact, if you eat a fire flower and ride a Yoshi, you can spit fireballs while he spits eggs.
New Super Mario Bros Wii has the potential to appease old school gamers who grew up on Mario and platformers, and more casual players who want to have fun with their kids or friends. The simultaneous multiplayer is a much welcomed feature, though at the moment it’s only available as localized four-player. There’s no word yet as to whether there’ll be an online multiplayer feature. It’s a shame Nintendo felt it had to throw in some unneeded Wiimote waggling, but let’s hope that there won’t be too much of it. We'll find out when the game ships next month.
