Chapter III
Those McCall boys just don’t know when to keep there mouths shut, which brings you to your first duel. I have two actions in mind for every duel. 1) I keep the tip of my thumb lined up with hammer of the pistol. This gives a quick and smooth upward flow to drawing. 2) Move in small spurts. Side-stepping when the bell rings will kill any hope of a fast draw.
Chapter III introduces the Weapon Store. As you can see from the list above, weapons have four grades and unique attributes. While it is tempting to upgrade right away, enemies will not require major upgrades for a few more chapters. I suggest purchasing a decent rifle/shotgun and pistol in Chapter IV or V, but saving most of your money until Chapter X and the appearance of superb-grade weaponry.
Secret – Congratulations chief, you just killed Betsy’s father. Back inside the saloon, head to the second floor hallway and inspect the bookcase.
Secret – Face the Weapons Store, standing about 10 paces away. Turn right and you will see a few bales of hay and a chest beneath a shelter.
Secret – After leaving the Weapon Store, you will have to climb, or be helped, back up to the second floor. Inside the bedroom of the screaming woman, there is a chest at the foot of the bed.
Achievement #21 Mayhem – This is a long section that is broken into three phases on the stagecoach, ending with a sprint through the mountains outside town, so don’t be too hasty with the restart button. In fact, it’s very unlikely that you could survive without killing at least 20 enemies. Speed counts for a lot in this section. Use pistols instead of rifles and remember that, as the single-weapon wielding Thomas, it’s faster to switch weapons than it is to reload.
Secret – The townsfolk push a wagon into the road to block the stagecoach, forcing you to get down. There a chest beneath a wooden shelter, directly left of the stagecoach, next to the fence.
Secret – In the same section, with the wagon blocking the stagecoach, go inside the barn. The secret is on the left, below a saddle that is hanging on one of the pillars.
Chapter IV
Women, gold, and a town of trigger-happy outlaws make for one bad combination. On the plus side, this dangerous little town also yields a large number of Achievements and a Weapon Store with a Prime Classic Gun. As Thomas, skip the bow. You can find better ones later.
Achievement #35 Mad Carpenter – The initial saloon isn’t the only place where you can bash people with chairs, but with five enemies and a full house of cheaply made furniture, it makes sense to do so. Besides, it’s best to be doing melee attacks when the opponents are still on the weak side. You might want to take out some of the gunslingers on the second floor first.
Achievement #30 Arkansas Fried Rooster – Obviously, you must play as Ray to make some crispy chicken. After clearing out the first section of the street, Thomas will make a comment about Ray being “Slow in the head.” At the next shootout, toss a stick of dynamite by the covered wagon at the barn. That should take care of 6-7 chickens. Later, you will do a Cooperative Concentration in a small courtyard with a fountain. You can get the remaining chickens behind the building. If you miss it, there will be other opportunities scattered throughout the game.
Secret – You will come to a joint-action (Thomas helping Ray up) within a few minutes of exiting the saloon. There is a windmill in the distance that you can use as a landmark. There will be a white arch before the windmill, and chest wedged between the arch and building on the left side.
Achievement #22 Sharpshooter Distraction – As Ray.
Achievement #23 Sharpshooter Destruction – As Thomas. Regardless of the character, the goal is to dispose of the snipers as quickly as possible. Will appears again and says, “You’re the ones who need looking after.” Move to the corner and immediately look to the right and up toward the roof. There are three snipers. Obviously, headshots are the fastest and most preferable way to get the job done.
Secret – After the second appearance of Will, where you face the snipers, there is a small alcove with a chest, behind the wooden shelter.
Secret – There will be a large shootout in the marketplace, directly in front of the Weapon Store. At the center of the marketplace is a water pump and a chest nearby.
Secret – Beyond the Weapon Store, the area of the next shootout has a yard with a goat. The secret is in the yard, on the bench with the hat.
Secret – The kidnapped woman (Marisa) has escaped into the church. There is a chest in the large side-room of the church.
Chapter V
There are opportunities to grab a standard shotgun, a peppergun, and a sawed-off in this chapter, although I recommend that you stick with the rifle for now. As you should be able to tell from first sight, there are going to be numerous uses for long-range weapons.
Secret – At the bottom of the first mining section (beginning of the chapter), there is a chest between the covered wagons.
Secret – In the shantytown with the Weapon Store, turn right and go toward the horses. There is a chest in the corner, under a supply crate, on the side opposite the Weapon Store.
Secret – There are two open rooms on the second floor of Devlin’s house (third door is a balcony). The room on the right has a chest to open.
Secret – You and your brother reunite in the canyon. There is a massive section of scaffolding up ahead with snipers. Four floors/flights of stairs up the main path of scaffolding, there is a chest at the dead end of a walkway. You brother should be waiting for you nearby.
Secret – This section is almost like a rollercoaster. After ascending the excavation site, a short flight of stairs will go back down, quickly followed by stairs going up again. Beneath the stairs going down is a chest.
Chapter VI
This chapter is an open environment, so I will number all secrets and organize them so that you can collect them while doing missions. I will also consider the front of the Weapon Store to be facing south. As Thomas, you can pick up a free bow at the water tower, southeast of the Weapon Store.
Achievement #31 Drive-By – You will be traveling on horseback for most of the time, so this is one of your best opportunities to grab this easy achievement. Watch out if you notice the screen quickly dipping toward the ground, as it is very possible that your horse will get shot out from beneath you.
Secret 1 – No quest. There is a chest in the burned-out house, directly south of the Weapon Store.
Secret 2 – No quest. Directly behind the Weapon Store, look for the secret at the base of a tree.
Secret 3 – Wanted: Ramos. Watch for a broken wagon directly between the Weapon Store and Ramos’ hideout. The location is noticeable from a slight distance because of the vultures circling overhead.
Secret 4 – Wanted: Ramos. On the second floor of Ramos’ hideout, you will open a door just in time to see the bandit run out the door to the outside stairs. In that same room, there is a safe around the corner to the left, next to a bed. There is time to get the secret and chase Ramos.
Secret 5 – You have defeated Ramos in a duel at the small shack at the southeastern corner. Head back north, toward Ramos’ hideout. There is a graveyard along the way, and a secret in an open coffin. Watch out for grave-robbers.
Secret 6 – Stolen Cattle. South of the Weapon Store is a windmill. On a ridge even further south, slightly hidden from the road, is a noose hanging down. The secret is beneath the noose, wedged behind a backpack.
Secret 7 – Stolen Cattle. The area for this quest has a northern and eastern entrance. Follow the incline of the eastern path. As you emerge into the canyon, the path will get narrow and slope sharply downward. Stop approximately halfway down the path, where two trees are growing sideways out of the cliff. Step toward the edge and look left. You will see a treacherous ledge leading out to some gear and a secret.
Secret 8 – Stolen Goods. There is a white house west of the Weapon Store. Inside the fence there is a ladder leading to the roof and a chest.
Secret 9 – Stolen Goods. From the white house of Secret 8, head west to the cliff-face and follow it southwest. There will be a small, well hidden mine-shift, noticeable only by two of the very few trees in the area. The secret is in the cart.
Secret 10 – Stolen Goods. Battle your way through the canyon of bandits. In the final cave, where Pereiro’s belongings are being held, you will find a chest behind the last supplies crate.
Secret 11 – Post-Stolen Goods. Continue following the cliff-face south until you reach a large section of scaffolding surrounding a mineshaft. The secret is in a bucket at the top of the scaffolding. Thomas can use his lasso to climb up. Ray must use the ladders and climb across the bridge of rock at the very top.
Secret 12 – At the far southwestern corner of the region there is an isolated house. The secret is behind the short wall.
Achievement #2 Act II
Chapter VII
Some of the gear at the Weapon Store is quite tempting, but trust me. Wait for the next chapter. There will also be a good amount of dynamite being tossed around, but this is not the time for the Quick Hands achievement. There are good reasons for doing it later.
Secret – Bring your horse to the sheriff’s office and pry open the bars to the window to get inside. There is a chest in the main office on the first floor.
Secret – There will be three snipers waiting for you (one two above and one slightly lower) after blowing the explosives shed off the face of the earth. There is a chest behind the barn, to the left of the upcoming Cooperative Concentration.
Achievement #36 Vindicator – As Ray, the gatling gun after the water tower fiasco can be removed and carried. You should take up a position near Thomas so that you can see where he is aiming and ensure that he doesn’t steal any of your kills. In the event that you do not get all 30 kills, there will be two instances where enemies will drop movable gatlings, in chapters IX and XV, or you can simply reload the last checkpoint. The totals will stack either way.
Secret – On the first floor of the saloon, there is a chest behind the bar.
Secret – The silent (i.e. freakishly unnerving) arms dealer will lead you across a path of rooftops. There is a lot of resistance, but don’t worry, he won’t leave you behind. There is a chest directly beneath the end, where he drops from the roof back to the ground.
Secret – Drop from the rooftops with the arms dealer, collect the previous secret, and head down the street toward the covered wagon. Your brother and the dealer will be on your right side as you pass them. There is a chest around the corner of the building, in the back by the horses.
Chapter VIII
Now you can buy some weapons, but you will want at least a $1,000 for superb weaponry by the time you reach Chapter X, if not double that. Like Chapter VI, this is an open environment. The front door of the Weapon Store is facing south and I will number the secrets to correspond with missions.
Secret 1 – No quest. Outside, on the right side of the Weapon Store, the secret is resting on a food stand.
Secret 2 – No quest. There is a small house in the foothills north of the Weapon Store. The secret is on a crate next to a wood pile.
Secret 3 – Jim Peters. Instead of following the dried river bed, continue directly south to a ranch with two barns. You don’t have to go inside. The secret is on a crate, outside of the fence, at the back of the eastern barn.
Secret 4 – Jim Peters. Follow the dried river bed southeast. There will be a group of outlaws waiting among the rocks on the left, on the way to Peter’s hideout. The secret and a backpack are leaning against a rock. If you reach the wooden fence overlooking the drop, you need to backtrack up the slope.
Secret 5 – Jim Peters. There is a chest in the last barn at Peters’ hideout, on the first floor.
Secret 6 – Jim Peters. Exit Peters’ hideout, turn right, and walk to the cliff by the smoking campfire. Peer over the edge to see the secret and someone who drank a little too much Jabol’s last night.
Secret 7 – Railroad Security. When you arrive at the rail-yard, go into the first barn and look on the supply crate to the right.
Secret 8 – Railroad Security. Cross the train-bridge (you can’t fall off) and stop at the encampment, not that you have much choice. There is a chest beneath the wooden shelter.
Secret 9 – Help Wanted/Freeman. From the Weapon Store, head directly toward the next objective. The path will lead you near the southern cliff-face (not the ravine) and a small encampment of outlaws on the raised section stretching across. The secret is among the rocks where the outlaws shoot at you from.
Secret 10 – Help Wanted/Freeman. Facing Freeman’s front door, look right and head to the far shack. It is a goat pen. Behind that is a chest.
Secret 11 – Help Wanted/Freeman. Snipes’ ranch has three main buildings. One of them is obviously a house for his posse, complete with makeshift barracks on the second floor. A chest is also on the second floor.
Secret 12 – Post-Help Wanted. When leaving Snipes’ ranch, follow the cliff-face north to reach a burned-out building. The secret is resting on a crate.
Achievement #12 Shield of Hope
