10 Not-So-Proud Moments in Gaming
10 ways to feel like a heel...

Games have a phenomenal way of triggering a wide range of emotions. While most of the time games are all about simply having a good time, there are certain instances where the exact opposite happens. Sometime players are given a choice – sometimes not – to do something that makes them feel not so proud of themselves. Here’s a list of ten experiences gamers have had over the years that left them questioning their own moral compass.

Bioshock – To catch a predator

The lumbering behemoths known as Big Daddies skulk about Rapture with their heads in the clouds and yet you killed them. What, may I ask, did they ever do to you? Absolutely nothing. They don’t even look in your direction unless you get too close to them or their charges, known as the Little Sisters. The over-sized, Chris Hansen’s of Rapture have but one duty and that’s all they care about. They don’t care that you are hiding in a darkened corner, jamming needles into your arm, but no, you had to prove that you were a bad ass. You wanted the little girl and you took on the proud papa to see if you could. Well I hope you feel good about it. Sicko.

Bully – Out of the closet and into the schoolyard

Sure, kissing various gals in Bully was all well and good and you even got to hang the rewards on your wall, but if you wanted that special achievement for the 360 version – the Over the Rainbow Achievement - you needed to lip lock with dudes around campus. Not only did you have to do it once, you had to do it twenty times. I have to admit. It was a shade uncomfortable. The things we do for Gamerscore points…

Black and White – If you’re slaphappy and you know it….

For those of you not familiar with Black and White, you have an avatar that you raise while at the same time take care of people who inhabit the land. The people build, farm, pray and such all while you give them a hand here and there to help them out. Your avatar, who can take the form of a cow, monkey and even a lion, will run around the land helping out the people as well as tormenting them every now and then. The avatar is like a child and sometimes needs to be scolded when he does something wrong.

This is fine and dandy except for when he actually didn’t do anything wrong and gets scolded anyways. In a story told to me, a player’s avatar had a ball that it would play with but had a nasty habit of eating it. So after the third or so ball the little cow had eaten, the player started to scold his avatar by slapping it around. Cowering and scared, not exactly sure what he had done wrong, the cow ran off sulking. Proud of his teaching abilities, the player’s heart suddenly sank as he scrolled over a hill to move on to something else and saw the ball lying there in the grass, out of reach of the avatar. And you can only yell, ”I’m sorry!” at the monitor so many times, ya know?

Mass Effect – Eeny, meeny, miny, moe

As you and your crew load the nuclear device onto the planet to take down Saren, something goes wrong and one of your team mates has to stay behind to make sure it’s all going to plan, while everyone else goes to take care of business. Once the Geth show up at the bomb site, you are faced with a choice, do you save Ashley or do you save Kaiden?

Although it may have been a heart wrenching moment knowing one of your own is about to die, it was Kaiden’s own fault for trying to get in the way of Sheppard and her blue alien love goddess. No sir, you do not stand in the way of hot alien action and for that you are left behind. Ok, so maybe I felt bad about it afterwards and I wasn’t too proud of what I had done. Not to mention Ashley – the dirty racist was still alive and she annoyed me more than he did.
