Popular industry blog Kotaku is reporting that Take Two has confirmed the cancellation of College Hoops 2K9, which was due out this fall. The company apparently had a break down in negotiations with the Collegiate Licensing Company, the organization which grants right to game companies to license NCAA players, teams and venues. 2K Sports issued the following statement to Kotaku today, confirming an earlier rumor:

“2K Sports has decided not to continue negotiations with the CLC for the license for its top-rated College Hoops franchise, which would have been released next in November 2008. We are committed to providing fans with high-quality, critically-acclaimed sports games, but given our disciplined approach to the business, we do not believe the current discussions would result in an acceptable outcome. “
What has not been confirmed is the other dynamic that may be at play in this story: EA Sports. According to an earlier report on the blog, EA Sports made a significant bid for the NCAA license - one that 2K Sports either couldn't or wouldn't compete with.
