QuakeCon 2006 Underway
Gamers converge on Dallas for annual mega action game fanfest.

QuakeCon 2006 officially opens today, as first-person shooter fans converge on Dallas, Texas to take part in some competitive fun for a crack at $100,000 in prizes and cash. Gamers will vie for $100,000 in cash and prizes over four days, August 3 – 6 at the Hilton Anatole Hotel - Trinity Exhibition Center in Dallas, Texas. QuakeCon 2006 is organized by a dedicated group of volunteers and Texas’ own video game icon, id Software, and offers 96 hours of parties, entertainment, fragging and adrenaline-pumping action. The event covers 120,000 square feet of space, including a sponsor/exhibit area that features displays and demos of some hot upcoming game titles such as Enemy Territory Quake Wars and showcases cutting-edge hardware from NVIDIA, Intel, Activision, PhysX and Ageia.

The NVIDIA Championship includes four tournaments with a total cash purse of $100,000 plus prizes. In honor of QUAKE's 10th birthday, QuakeCon presents a fan-only QUAKE 4 tournament with $10,000 in cash up for grabs. Gamers will also battle it out for bragging rights and cash in the QUAKE 4 1V1, QUAKE 4 2V2 and Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory 5V5 tournaments.

Other activities include a keynote from John Carmack, co-founder, co-owner and technical director of id Software; a live shoutcast and video footage being served up on www.quakecon.org ; Fan Appreciation Activities like the chance to win free wag and gear by participating in fan appreciation events that will take place throughout the weekend (a photo scavenger hunt, Bawls chugging contest, Guitar Hero tournament, mapping contest, bracket busters and NVIDIA’s QuakeCon Has Talent, a competition where attendees can show off their abilities in music, dance, comedy, magic and more).

This year's sponsors include id Software, NVIDIA, Activision, Intel, SpikeTV, Ziff Davis (The 1UP Network), PhysX and Ageia. Other companies supporting QuakeCon 2006 through contest and promotion item giveaways include Ak Design, Bawls, Cooler Master, Crucial Technology, D-Link, Logitech, OCZ Technology and Razer.
