While many of the big titles hitting PlayStation 3 later this year have been known for some time, Sony still had plenty of new games to talk about. Impressive new games for PlayStation Network, PlayStation Portable, and even a tease of some new PlayStation 3 games marked Sony's annual E3 press briefing in Los Angeles this afternoon.
“Exclusive downloads are nice, but exclusive titles are what truly drive consumers to pick a platform,” contended Sony Computer Entertainment America President Jack Tretton. Helping to back his claim that PlayStation 3 is set to have the most compelling exclusive titles for 2008 was new footage of Resistance 2 and LittleBigPlanet. Following these trailers, Tretton revealed the Greatest Hits line of titles for PlayStation 3. Included are Resistance: Fall of Man, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and Ninja Gaiden Sigma among others. Other values available for gamers to come later this year include a new LEGO Batman/PlayStation 2 Slim Bundle for $149.
Moving from expected announcements, new PlayStation Network title Ratchet and Clank: Quest for Booty received an official unveil. Producer Brian Allgeier described the game as a "shorter, less expensive experience" that could be likened to a "summer blockbuster movie." The game picks up directly after the events of Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction and is planned for a release exclusively via PlayStation Network later this summer for $14.99.
Other games coming to the service include Crash Commando, Fat Princess, the previous-announced Pixel Junk Eden, an expansion pack for Pain, Flower, and Ragdoll Kung-Fu: Fists of Plastic. Also coming to the Network is an update to Gran Turismo 5: Prologue called Gran Turismo TV that offers special videos for download. The update will be available August 1.
Of course, PlayStation Home remains the most anticipated pieces of software for PlayStation Network. Tretton wouldn't nail down a definitive release for Home, stating instead that "your patience will be rewarded." New footage of the program was shown, which provided a look at many of the new locales in development for the public beta.
A brand new movie download service, however, should keep you entertained in the wait. Movies can be downloaded in either standard or high definitions, with rent and purchase options. Films will range from $9.99 to $14.99. Even better, you can transfer purchased content to your PSP and watch it there. A separate tab in the PlayStation Store entitled "video" will house all offerings beginning this evening.
