In 1998 a new anime series called Trigun was released, and on
December 13th it was re-introduced to us on yet another format – UMD for PSP. For the many fans
of the show out there this is great news and for anyone who has not yet
seen this show it gives them a great opportunity to see it if you own a
PSP. Trigun the series is a different kind of anime show. Set in
the far future on a desert planet it's an interesting combination of western meets post
apocalyptic life.
The show has an ever-growing list of characters but is
mostly written around four main personalities. There's Wolfwood the priest who carries a weapon resembling a cross (called the cross full of mercy) but is really a combination of three weapons: a rocket, an automatic rifle, and a pistol. I must admit i really like the priests attitude, which is somewhat caring with the desire to protect life but with the bolder idea of protect your own ass and do what has to be done no matter what.
Then there's the main character of Vash The Stampede A.K.A.- the humanoid
typhoon. This is a very interesting character who is constantly in battle
but rarely kills anyone as he feels human life is to precious. Anyone
who meets Vash has a very hard time believing its him due to his
constant goofiness. It's because of this that bounty hunters constantly
mistake each other for him when they are trying to kill him for the 60 billion double dollar reward that's on his head. What results is them not only fighting
each other but destroying whatever town they are in. That's why Vash's
nickname, the humanoid typhoon is so hilarious; he hardly has a hand in
the destruction around him.
It's because of all the destruction that we
have the last 2 main characters in the story at all. their names are
Milly Thompson and Meryl Stryfe and they are the disaster investigators
from Bernadelli Insurance agency whose sole job is to follow Vash
around to keep him from damaging anything else. Although they are just 2
girls who are kind of nerdy they can be helpful in bad situations
- especially a fight which is where there weapons that they carry come in handy. Millie weapon is a giant stun gun and Meryl's is a Dillinger pistol.
You'll notice the difference between these two girls right away by Milly's towering form as opposed to Meryl's stature. But their size does not match their true personalities: You'll notice that Milly will lose all her confidence and will need
instructions on what to do from Meryl, who is a strong willed and intelligent spirit who takes charge of situations when the going gets rough.
So there's quite a
lot of depth to the characters in Trigun and they are always growing as
well as changing a little more each episode as they build relationships
(whether good or bad) with each other. If you're a fan of the show then
you should check it out on UMD. I've just watched the first 2 episodes on
that format and they were pretty cool- they are titled the 60 Million
Dollar Man and Truth of Mistake. The visual detail on these were great on the PSP and the audio is pretty solid, although I did notice that the dialog you hear and doesn't seem to match the English subtitles – not a big deal, but the translation could have been tightened up a bit more because sometimes it felt like two different stories were being told at the same time.
My biggest problem
with this UMD is the price. Averaging 14.99 in most
stores I feel that's a little to high for only 2 episodes, if it weren't for
that I'd say this is a perfect UMD to own as it's a great and unique show
to watch. The Trigun Volume 1 UMD is 50 minutes long and is recommended for the
age 13+.
