In 1998 the Farrelly Brothers (The boys behind Me, Myself and Irene; Kingpin; and Dumb and Dumber) released There's Something About Mary, a comedy starring Cameron Diaz and Ben Stiller in a wild and crazy tale about a girl that guys couldn't help but fall in love with. The film was a commercial success and a big hit with fans, but was heavily panned by critics for its lack of political correctness. Despite that, There's Something About Mary is a great film that mixes physical comedy, mild gross outs, and an endearing story about the little guy getting the girl.
The film chronicles Ted Stroehmann's (played by Ben Stiller) longtime love for Mary Jensen (Cameron Diaz) - even after a prom date that sees Ted land himself in the hospital following a bizarre zipper accident. Flash forward to the late 90's and Ted finds himself carrying the torch for Mary still and ponders what has happened to her. His friend Woogie (Chris Elliott) convinces him that he should use a private detective named Pat Healy (Mat Dillon) to track her down. What happens from there is what happens to every guy that meets her - he falls in love, and tells Ted that Mary is a fat disgusting mess. And so the movie goes into an adventure that touches on every politically incorrect thing you could think of - animal cruelty, picking on the handicap, homosexuality and plenty of gross out humor.
Something About Mary is a story that everyone can relate to - finding that childhood sweetheart and living happily ever after sounds like a dream come true. But what happens when everyone loves the girl you want? That's what this story is all about and it is told in a way that will fill you with gut busting laughter.
And when we say this film is politically incorrect we mean it. There's violence, liberal use of the word "retard," violence against animals, prison parodies, police brutality, and a whole lot more. This film doesn't shy away from touching on the tasteless side of life, but it does it in a way that is so funny that you can forgive the subject matter.
Beyond that there's a very sweet storyline about an average guy who gets the beautiful girl, despite the fact that he ultimately tries to bow out of the race to win her affections. Something About Mary is a decent balance of all its parts.
While the UMD doesn't deviate too much from its DVD release, it's still a great bargain and a must buy for fans who love good comedies. The UMD also offers a few outtakes and lots of bloopers, but the main draw is the film itself, which is one of the funniest I've seen in a long time. Buy it and add it to your UMD collection.
