Capcom Classics Collection Reloaded Review
11 out of 15
A pretty nice mix of classic arcade games from Capcom with an easy to swallow price point.

It's very hard for me to knock a classic collection of games on any platform and from any company as long as the selection of games is varied and interesting. Although there are a lot of familiar faces in this PSP collection from Capcom, there's just enough new games to give it a solid recommendation. Capcom Classics Collection Reloaded offers 19 classic arcade titles from 1984 - 1992, a period of time where Capcom dominated the arcades in Japan and North America with some pretty compelling and addictive games like the 1942 franchise, Street Fighter II, and the Ghost and Goblins games.

Capcom Classics Reloaded does feature a number of the same games found in the classic collections previously released on other platforms like the PS2 and Xbox like 1942, 1943, Commando, Gun.Smoke, several versions of Street Fighter II (Street Fighter II Champion Edition, Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting and the original Street Fighter II), three Ghost and Goblins games (Ghosts and Goblins, Ghouls and Ghosts, and Super Ghost and Goblins), Son Son, Mercs, and Pirate Ship Higemuru. But unlike other collections Reloaded does offers some freshness with games like Exed Exes, Eco Fighters, 1943 KAI, The King of Dragons, Knights of the Round and that arcade classic Vulgus.

Many of these games only support single player, but a handful support a two player, 3 player and even co-op play via ad-hoc. Capcom has done a fine job of tailoring these titles to work well with multiple players, so even those who have played these games before will get a different kind of experience. Gamers can even play through some of these titles in co-op mode which is pretty sweet, though it does tend to make a playthrough sessions easier than going solo... There's also a nice game sharing feature for a handful of the games so those that don't own this fine collection can experience a taste of it thanks to your generosity.

There's also a lot of additional content that you can unlock in a slots style mini-game where you use points you earn from playing games. These extras include original game music, art and cheats for a lot of the games. These cheats certainly make things easier for those that don't have the intestinal fortitude to make it through the games without some help. The slots mini-game is heavily themed featuring pictures of Ryu and other Street Fighters and others as well as Capcom logos and traditional slot symbols that you need to match up in order to win. Beyond winning extras, players can also win points that they spend at the slots. While this mini-game is pretty gimmicky it sure does provide some fun diversions as you struggle to unlock some pretty cool content -- and most of that content is worth taking the time to unlock.

All the extras aside, the most important thing are the games and there's a nice mix of them in this collection. There's the side scrolling action RPG style game The King of Dragons (a classic arcade side scrolling action game offering gameplay and a multitude of different characters to choose from), Knights of the Round (another classic that can best be described as Final Fight meets Camelot), And Capcom's very first arcade shooter game, Vulgus. There's a total of 19 games, and with such a low price point it's tough to complain about any of them (a little over a $1 per game).

In the final analysis Capcom Classics Collection Reloaded is a nice eclectic mix of arcade classics that look and play well on the PSP. But beyond that, this collection also serves as a tribute to Capcom's early days as a leader in arcades across the United States, Japan and Europe.
