In 1999 writer/director Mike Judge (creator of Beavis and Butt-Head and King of the hill) brought one of his comedic short animations to film with the movie Office Space, on November 1st 2005 Sony PSP re-introduced us to the movie by releasing it in UMD format. For the fans of this film here’s your chance to see it in a new format, and for the few people who haven’t seen it, trust me when I say it's worthy of adding to your collection.
The movie Office Space addresses the conflicts and problems that anyone who has ever worked in an office can relate to, including nagging bosses, faulty equipment, and quirky co-workers. Right from the start you’ll find yourself sympathizing with the main character, Peter Gibbons (Ron Livingston) whose day to day activities at Initech Corporation have finally become so monotonous it drives him over the edge. After visiting a hypno-therapist and adopting a new "I don’t care" attitude on the situation, Peter tries to get fired, which somehow only leads to him being promoted. So with the help of his two (soon to be terminated) co-workers Michael Bolton (David Herman) and Samir Nagheenanajar (Ajay Naidu) the three devise a plan to steal money from Initech Corporation by using a computer virus to funnel money to a bank account they’ve set up. Which as expected just leaves them all broke in the end. It might all sound like a straight forward plot but, director/writer Mike Judge made sure there was more to the story by using a few subplots, such as the underlying relationship that develops between Peter and his new girlfriend Joanna played by Jennifer Aniston, or the use of the Milton Waddams character, played by Stephen Root who seems to get picked on by everyone in the office until a little pyromania helps him get even. But my favorite character in this movie would have to be that of Bill Lumbergh's played by Gary Cole who is every bad manager we've all ever had combined into one.
An extended cast of characters really added to this film with big names such as Diedrich Bader (Lawrence the outspoken hillbilly-like neighbor), John C. Mcginley (Bob Slydell the efficiency expert in charge of layoffs) and even a small part played by Mike Judge who plays Joanne’s irritating restaurant manager. So between an excellent cast of characters and some really funny scenes (which I still refer to when talking comedies with friends), Office Space makes for a must see movie (if your one of the 7 who hasn’t seen it yet) or a great addition to your collection if you don’t already own it.
This leads me back to the fact that it's been issued in UMD for the Sony PSP. I have to say, I was kind of surprised at the clarity and detail you see when watching a film on the PSP (as this was my first). I’m usually one of those people who thinks bigger is better when it comes to televisions but I can honestly say I didn’t have to strain to see anything on the screen. The sound quality was pretty decent as well (although I recommend using headphones if you like it on the louder side). Also if you like Office Space I think you’ll really like the special feature found on the UMD which is an all new "retrospective with writer/director Mike Judge" that has interviews and comments by just about every cast member in the film, including some background on the animated short (from MTV ) that office space is based on. The movie is in anamorphic Widescreen and runs approximately 89 minutes and was rated R for adult language.
