Electroplankton Review
9 out of 15
This musical Nintendo DS is fun, but flawed.

There is the Beatnes mode as well, which I found to be the most fun of them all. There are five swivelling towered plankton that wave back and forth in the water. The head and the tail each have a unique classic Nintendo sound from Super Mario Bros, Kid Icarus, NES collection, to a weird robot one. In the background you will have classic background music playing, which you can toggle by hitting the select button to move to the next one. Your job is to create a tune to remix overtop of those songs. You do that by touching the pillars. Once you touch the pillar it will record that note, and play it back to you four times at a set rate. You can do this with a series of notes and sound FX as well. This is the mode that if you have no musical talent at all, you can still put something together. What I would have preferred though is that you could continue having the beats playing until you wanted to change them,

The final mode is the Volvoice plankton. This one only uses the microphone, and your voice to create the overtone. What it allows you to do is record your voice through it, and play it back using a few filters. They have a plankton blob in the middle, that will adjust to which mode you chose. Each is very unique, which range from repeating your voice in a higher pitch, or talking backwards slowly. As you put it in the record mode, the blob will fill up the more you talk, which is quite cool, though when it is playing back your voice though it will shrink down. You can have it repeat the same message over and over while you change the types of playback, even though some are very annoying.

The top-screen in Electroplankton services little purpose. What it does is has a close up of where your stylus last touched on the screen, or the current item activated. You may zoom in or out with the X and Y buttons though. The graphics are simplistic, but are very pleasing to look at, which can be quite nice when you just want a game to relax and unwind with.

If you are ever unsure of how a level could sound, you may always try out the audience mode, where the computer will play around with the different levels, showing you what can be accomplished. The best part of this mode is that you may also join in with the computer, to collaborate on a project.

Overall, this is a hard "game" to review, because it is not really a game, rather just a pass time. It also spots a lot of innovation and thought, which you can tell by how easily you can interact with the plankton. Everything looks really nice, and you can tell they did spend a lot of time on it, while trying to make play as good as it sounds. The sound is fantastic in the game, but to best appreciate it, use your headphones to get the full punch. I did feel overwhelmed with sound on too many different levels, which left my music sounding crappy, even though it was my fault for having so many different notes. All of the music is also in stereo, which is neat as it bounces from speaker to speaker. At least me, it was quite fun in the beginning, but it quickly lost that feeling. The worst part is there was no novelty to have me return to it.

The concept of the game if really neat, but when it is put into play, it disappoints. It ends up feeling like it is a side game to a larger game, like a little bonus unlockable, and as such it does not feel like a full serving of a game. I would recommend anyone out there to rent this game first before deciding if you want to buy it, otherwise you may just try everything out in the first hour, then give up on it. All and all, Captain Gordon gives this game a... C+.
