Wedding Crashers DVD Review

Rule #28: Good actors, a decent plot and perfect pacing are the key ingredients to an almost perfect comedy!

What do you get when you mix Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn, And Christopher Walken together with a wedding party setting? About a thousand laughs. So when Warner Home Video released Wedding Crashers to DVD it was no shock to find myself laughing for 128 minutes straight.

Wedding Crashers is the story of two single men, John Beckwith (Owen Wilson) and Jeremy Grey (Vince Vaughn) who live all year for one thing, wedding season. The reason they look forward to those wonderful spring days filled with love is not because they are hopeless romantics -- on the contrary they are wedding crashers. Not just any wedding crashers either, John and Jeremy are pros with a set of rules and a code of ethics for everything. These two are on the quest for free food, booze, all around partying, and most importantly a long run of one night stands with some of the most beautiful woman that would normally be out of their league. Of course everyone knows that women at weddings are so infatuated with the thought of true love they are willing to throw all there inhibitions to the wind (at least according to the movie).

Everything is going perfectly for them as usual until they decide to crash the wedding of all weddings: that of Treasury Secretary William Cleary's (Christopher Walken) daughter. It's at this wedding that John starts to realize true love when he meets the treasury secretary's daughter Claire (Rachel McAdams). After making a good impression on Claire, John and his friend Jeremy find themselves invited back to the family home for the weekend. This is when a lot of the action and comedy takes place. So this movie is basically summed up by saying that these "wedding crashers" find themselves in over their heads.

The plot may have been done an injustice by my quick summery of the film (I didn’t want to give too much away) but believe me when I say there’s a lot to it. There’s not actually too much I have to say in the way of convincing you to see this DVD considering the fact that it has Vince Vaughn in it and it seems that everything he gets involved with is successful. Not that Owen Wilson doesn't bring anything to the table in this film -- on the contrary he can be quite the comedian if he’s in the right movie setting (Shanghi Knights for instance). Also you'll find no lack of respect from this film fan when it comes to the talents of Christopher Walken. So what I'm getting at is that this film has a great cast of characters and the director David Dobkin got the pacing perfect on this film. The problem with too many comedies lately seems to be that they are paced entirely too slow. Wedding Crashers definitely doesn't suffer from this at all - as a matter of fact, once the film gets rolling it doesn’t slow until the movie's over.

I think when first time writers Steve Faber and Bob Fisher wrote Wedding Crashers (whether or not they realized it), the film was written for Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson (or a least two guys just like them that can take fast paced off the cuff dialog and make it go together and flow with perfection). There was another really funny guy in this film; Will Ferrell, who really only had a cameo appearance, brought some great laughs as usual.

One of the very few things I didn’t like about wedding crashers is that after watching the outtakes I realized that they took out some pretty good scenes when there were a few others that were unnecessary that could have been removed instead. Another big flaw I saw was the character of Sack Lodge played by Bradley Cooper who portrayed the fiancé of Claire Cleary. I felt that for such an important role he didn’t do a very good job, possibly because this is his first film (all of his other work was appearances on TV shows). I did see what the director was going for in the womanizing sleazy fiance role but I felt that it didn’t come across correctly. The only time you knew he was a slick playboy type is when his character was on the phone or talking to his friends. So it pretty much felt like it was two characters rather than one. But that said , the few negative thoughts I had on this film aren't enough to keep me from suggesting that this is a must own DVD that will definitely stand up to the test of time in anyone's comedy collection. This is definitely a movie you can watch and watch again.

So if you like the movie Wedding Crashers (and I know you will) then you should appreciate the extras. This uncorked edition, which includes the rated theatrical version as well as the unrated version with an additional 8 ½ minutes, also features deleted scenes, a behind the scenes featurette, commentary with Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn, commentary with director David Dobkin, and much more. GameShark gives Wedding Crashers a well deserved "A".
