Fight Night Round 3 Review

Fight Night Round 3 is the jewel of the EA Sports PlayStation 3 lineup.

If I have any issues with the game, and like I said, I’m pickier than most when it comes to boxing games, it would have to do with some little things, like the fighter selection. 26 licensed fighters are included (one less than the 360 version, with Evander Holyfield not available for PS3), and while I understand the difficulties of putting together a roster without the benefit of a central organization like the NFLPA or NBAPA making things run more smoothly, having a heavyweight division with just six fighters (and two of them are blown up middleweights – Roy Jones and James Toney) and no current champions is disappointing. Add in the fact that in the lower weight classes four fighters – including prospect Vicente Escobedo and fringe contender Juan Lazcano - are under contract to the promotional company run by coverboy Oscar De La Hoya, and it adds up to a less than stellar lineup.

I also take offense to the fact that a fighter employing a stick and move strategy of using the ring, defense, and the jab is not rewarded on the scorecards. Or maybe the game really does mimic real life boxing when it comes to lousy decisions.

Aside from these nitpicks, Fight Night Round 3 is still a must buy for the PS3 - even if you have another console’s version of it. Yeah, it’s that good, and is the jewel of the EA Sports lineup.
