There are two areas of note that make F.E.A.R. for the PS3 definitely worth a rental: online multiplayer and the game’s audio. The online deathmatches are lag free and full of competitors – it is very easy to max out a game at the full 16 players, which for the PS3 is a huge bonus.
The audio gives meaning to why the game was called “FEAR’…it is jump out of your seat scary, even on a lowly 2.1 surround system. Everything sounds great – from the soundtrack to the audio of the enemy ….it really feels like you are being hunted so it at least gets this part of the experience right.
It’s impossible to review the PS3 version without looking over at the PC and 360 editions, which are both clearly superior games. Why pay that kind of money for a PS3 game with poor controls and graphics when the same game can be had for a better price on other platforms? Unless you are one of those super-rare gamers who only owns a PS3 without a gaming PC or an Xbox 360, then the game is worth checking out just for the scare factor alone – otherwise, it’s a pass.
