The game would have benefited greatly from a split screen multiplayer mode – in a game where you can be the ‘hunter’ or the ‘hunted’ it’s a shame you can’t play one-on-one on the same console like you can in a game like Call of Duty. There is online multiplayer for up to 16 players, however finding players is easier said than done which is disappointing for such a newly released title. Multiplayer games can be fun but are also difficult—especially when shooting a gun while on horseback. There are six different multiplayer modes to choose from. Standard FPS modes with a twist – so instead of Capture the Flag, we have Capture the Bag (of gold). Instead of SWAT team vs. Terrorists, we have “Robbery” where one group has to steal the gold and escape within a specific amount of time and the Lawmen have to protect the gold. The Famous Events mode gives you maps from – you guessed it – famous events, like the Gunfight at the OK Corral and The Fall of the Dalton Gang.
Call of Juarez does a lot right and is an enjoyable game if you can get by the linearity, the silly and terribly annoying stealth missions and fairly easy shooting model. A lack of split screen multiplayer is a major disappointment (especially for a duel), even though the online play is fun. There’s just not a lot of “wow” here and it feels like a Vectrex game: it’s the same gameplay as any other on-rails FPS, but you’ve just changed the overlay on the screen to a Western.
