Mario scores a goooooaaall! (And goes online...)

The MegaStrike is an exciting moment, but you’ll see the same cut scene every time for every MegaStrike. It’s not a terribly long cut scene, but it gets tired. The goals that your sidekicks make are creative – each sidekick has their own ‘style’ goal; one can burrow underground and then shoot in front of the keeper, while another one flings stone axes at the keeper thereby taking him out and making it easy to score.

A “domination” mode is included which allows for single console competitive or cooperative play, which is a whole lot of fun. There’s one other multiplayer mode – online. Yes that’s right— a real, true-life online multiplayer live action game is on the Wii!

While the online play doesn’t have the same depth as an Xbox Live Arcade game, it’s definitely a good first time effort. There’s a “striker of the day” shown every day based on the single day performance of a player (and they show your Mii!). You can play against a friend or in a ranked game (friends are not ranked games). Online play is lag free and extremely enjoyable. The only drawback is the terrible “Friend Code” mode makes its way in the game and not only that, but your friend code for the game is different than your “regular” Wii friend code, so if you’ve already added friends on your console, you have to re-add them in Strikers in order to play them.

Certainly it makes sense for Nintendo to be cautious as possible with online personas, but this is taking it too far! If you’ve already added friends to your list, they should carry over to the game, period. However, if this is what we as gamers have to suffer through in order to play games online on our Wii, we can all live with it.

As a single player game, it provides quite a bit of arcade action and the power ups make it a challenge and if you love to play online, this will keep you busy for quite some time.
